Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerry Lexion.
Jerry, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I first fell in love with photography at Sixteen years old. My father gifted me with a disposable camera. I shot birthday parties, Christmas parties, and family events, not understanding its artistic value.
Fast forward to the year 2005: while working as a celebrity chauffeur I was broadsided with divorce papers. For some reason, the camera brought me peace. In the past when stressful situations happened in my life, alcohol was my peace. The camera became my solace. Photography saved my life.
Turmoil reignited the flame of photography within. I became an apprentice to Fred Carter (Staff Photographer for Mayor A. Villaraigosa). He would allow me to tag along with him and get shots with him. Soon after I was afforded the opportunity to shoot Laura Diaz (Tv Anchor) and Oscar De La Hoya (Boxing Champion). When Fred saw my work he told me, “You Got It.” From then on photography became my world. The lens opened my eyes to new horizons; possibilities infinite.
I then became a student of the art of photography. My camera went with me everywhere. I spent every minute of everyday devouring information on the art form; countless hours studying lighting, composition, and theory. I will forever and always be a student of the art form.
As an Assignment Photographer, I have shot numerous celebrities, been published in periodicals, domestic and international, and traveled to destinations I’ve once only imagined: all for the love of the craft. The creation of light is very addictive. I am yet on a crusade for the ultimate photograph. This quest is the unyielding force that continues to propel me forward.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest obstacles I faced in photography were getting my work seen in a professional setting. My biggest challenges were understanding lighting, colors, and transition.
What are some of the influences that have played the biggest role in your journey so far?
Fred Carter who a staff photographer for Antonio Villaraigosa former mayor of Los Angeles was my biggest influence in photography. He gave me the understanding of composition, lighting, and depth of field. He also taught me how to develop relationships with potential customers.
What kind of work do you look forward to most?
Some of my favorite type of photography would be live stage performances, concerts, plays, etcetera. And I love fashion, advertisement and lifestyle photography. In the last two years, I’ve been venturing into boxing.
What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned over the course of your career?
If I had to start over again I would have taken a course on business management. There’s a true separation between an artist and the business part of this photography
