Meet Kitty McNamee in Highland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kitty McNamee.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kitty. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up in a small town in Ohio, my escape from country life was watching movie musicals. There was some magic in them, a secret language that spoke directly to me. A door to that magic opened when a second company of The Joffrey Ballet came through town. The moment that I saw the living bodies moving through space, I was struck full force, I had to do THAT. I was never a brilliant dancer but I understood movement and I understood story. I knew how the two came together. The investigation of how they come together has been the driving force in all of my work, regardless of genre.

Despite starting late, I was able to attend a performing arts high school and went on to University. After moving to LA I bounced around, trying to find my artistic niche. I founded Hysterica Dance Co., an LA based dance collective, and it was AMAZING! For over 10 years, I created original contemporary dance works and focused on collaborating with designers and composers and nurturing the next generation of dance makers.

I now work across media – onstage for the Opera and LA Philharmonic. I also choreograph for more commercial ventures, like commercial spots for Target and Mercedes, music videos, TV and film.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to success has been more like a sea to success – waves of sweet ups and downs. It can be challenging to find a balance between super creative, self-determined work and the work that pays the bills. Luckily, I enjoy a challenge and I’m resilient.

Kitty McNamee – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I choreograph, I create, I connect people. I’m very proud of the relationships that I have nurtured over the years here in LA. I love people and am fascinated by the complexities of relationships… I think my ability to key into an individual artist and draw out the best of what they have tucked away inside sets me apart.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My definition of success is living a fulfilling life. Whether it be through work or friends or family. To be present is a gift. Personally, the ability to make something (in my case dances) and contribute them feels like success, regardless of the monetary outcome. The longevity of my relationships with dancers and collaborators feels like a great success as well.
