Conversations with Vurv (Band)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vurv (Band).

Hi Vurv, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Vurv is a prog/punk/alt rock all grrrl band based out of San Diego. Our current lineup consists of Sidney Merritt (guitar), Sarita Patrick (guitar), B.R.U.T. (bass), and Christina Leigh (drums). We got started out of the love for playing music and from a vision for writing and playing original songs. Christina had known each of us separately before the band came together. She met Sidney through common friends in the music scene and met Noura through a mutual friend who also works with Noura. She met Alessandra Garcia (former Vurv guitarist) through an online ad, and Alessandra had played with Christina prior to meeting everyone else. In 2024, with encouragement from Sidney to start an all grrrl punk band, Christina brought us all together to play in this band. At the beginning, Noura wasn’t 100% sure she wanted to join because of the time commitment, but she wanted to meet us and see what it was like to play together. Next thing you know, we all got to work right away and focused on composing, self-producing, and releasing our first album at the end of 2025, as well as playing about 1-2 shows per month. In the spring of 2026, we were nominated by the San Diego Music Awards for Best New Artist of 2025. Even though we didn’t win the award, being recognized for all the work we put into this project has been an honor and a nod for us to keep working and doing what we love to do. Our new guitarist, Sarita, just joined us this spring, and we are looking forward to playing our first show with her!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road, because we all bring something to the table and contribute to the band in different ways. We are all cool and open to each other’s opinions, and we communicate well (maybe because we are all women). Also, each of us comes from a different stage of life — a different generation — so we have different perspectives and various strengths that we bring to the band. We also like to have fun, which makes any minor difficulty easy to move through.

We think the most difficult thing for us is coordinating our schedules, since each of our lives outside of music are vastly different. Sometimes that can put a damper on the collaborative part of our creative process, because getting everyone’s input on something can take a while. But we persevere, and when we do get together to create and play music, we always make the most of it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Vurv is a prog/punk/alt rock all grrrl band that specializes in original genre-bending music. We are all about the DIY process when creating music and art. There is something of substance in that process that stays with you and makes it feel whole. We write our own music and book and promote our own shows. We are known for being a fun, entertaining, and musically interesting band. We are most proud of our live shows and how much fun we get to have on stage while seeing people’s reaction to our music and our live show antics in real time. We are also proud of our first album that we recorded, produced, and released last year. Give it a listen! We believe what sets us apart from other all grrrl punk bands is that we have a variety of different songs where every song has a unique sound.

Any big plans?
Our future plans are to keep writing and recording new original music and to continue to shape our live performances all while having a great time doing it. Also, we are looking to book more spots at local and regional music festivals. We had a personnel change this year so we are also looking forward to getting to play with our new guitarist, Sarita, who just joined the band this Spring. We are currently working on songs for our second album with more of an intention of writing some heavier music for this album. For this next album, we will do things a little differently compared to our first album and really take our time with releasing a few singles and eventually the whole album all while spending more time in the other aspects of the creative process like music videos, flyers/posters, etc. in relation to the album.
