Life & Work with Christian Abaza of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Abaza.

Hi Christian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I came from a family of western physicians, so I appreciate the western side of medicine: But I also found that many aspects were lacking which is what drew me to eastern and traditional Chinese medicine. I was researching neruoscience at the time and I wanted to explore the brain and consciousness in depth, as well as bridging ancient esoteric teachings with modern neuroscience. All of this lead me to functional medicine and TCM

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely wasn’t easy. I moved across the country from my family and started the journey by myself. I had to start a new life while navigating work and graduate school. There were a lot of times I would have to starve just to have enough money for rent. But in the end it was with the struggle

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I practice acupuncture and Chinese medicine: What sets me apart from most other TCM practitioners is my knowledge of Taijiquan (Tai chi) and Qi Gong, which I learned from the traditional Yang family in Chinatown Boston MA. The descendants of the family set up a school there in the 1950’s and have kept the traditional lineage alive- things that most regular tai chi practitioners won’t be able to show you. While in grad school I also mentored under one of the disciples of Master Tung, so I know a very advanced needling technique most other practitioners do not

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
In the words of Carlos Castaneda “an ordinary man treats everything as a blessing or as a curse, while a warrior sees everything as a challenge”

For me there’s no good or bad luck- everything is an endless challenge to refine the spirit
