Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Schmid.
Hi Olivia , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Our story begins at the intersection of deep domain expertise and a shared frustration with an industry stuck in the past. Keri Concannon is a veteran sales leader with over 20 years in the medical aesthetics industry, having spent nearly a decade at Obagi Medical and serving as AVP of Marketing at Clinical Skin. Olivia Schmid is a Columbia Law and London Business School graduate who built B2B categories at Amazon and led commercial operations for top global injectable brands at Galderma and AbbVie (Allergan). We therefore experienced the market’s operational inefficiencies firsthand and are building a solution we wish we had.
The medical aesthetics space is a booming, multi-billion-dollar market. Yet, while the consumer-facing side is ultra-modern and high-tech, the B2B infrastructure behind it remains shockingly antiquated. We noticed that the average practice today carries around 14 different brands. To manage that, clinics are forced to juggle a dozen different sales reps, countless siloed portals, and endless PDFs. But the real “lightbulb moment” came when we looked at how transactions were actually happening. In a world where you can order groceries with a single tap on your phone, some practices were still literally faxing in purchase orders. The B2B side of the industry was completely left behind by the digital revolution. On one side, practices are wasting valuable clinical hours on ordering product, and on the other side, brands are losing 40–60% of their revenue to massive, inefficient sales overhead to service a growingly fragmented market (more medspa’s than McDonalds locations in the US today!). We knew there had to be a better way. We founded Beauty Rep to bring a seamless, consumer-grade, “DTC-like experience” to B2B medical aesthetics. We built the platform to serve as a centralized hub—a digital infrastructure layer where anyone from solo estheticians and to clinic chains alike can discover new brands, access clinical education, download marketing assets, and place orders seamlessly in one intuitive platform. By replacing faxes, phone calls, and fragmented workflows with modern technology (including our trademarked AI assistant, AesthetiTech), we are transforming how brands and practices connect, transact, and scale together.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road and still isnt! The personal sacrifices that come with founding a company are immense. Leaving secure, high-profile corporate roles to take a massive gamble on an unproven idea meant instantly giving up a steady salary, which brings real pressure and impact to our families who are on this roller coaster with us. Beyond the financial stress, being an entrepreneur means dealing with a constant chorus of skeptics. We had plenty of people tell us our idea wouldn’t work or that the industry was too set in its ways to change. When you are trying to rewrite an old-school, deeply entrenched way of working, you have to develop incredibly thick skin and find the conviction to see past the noise, trusting your vision even when the path forward is completely uncertain.
On top of those personal hurdles, building in this specific space comes with unique industry challenges:
The medical aesthetics industry is not yet clearly regulated, which has historically created compliance and trust issues. Rather than waiting for the industry to catch up, we are building the necessary gatekeeping directly into our technology, rigorously vetting every brand for legitimacy and every practice for proper medical licensing to ensure a high-trust marketplace.
Additionally, navigating the sheer cost and logistical barriers of the market has been a massive hurdle, particularly for global innovative indie brands. For example, smaller international brands traditionally “never make it” to the U.S. because expansion costs and a lack of local market knowledge are completely prohibitive. A big part of our journey has been de-risking the U.S. market for global innovators.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Beauty Rep is the essential digital infrastructure for both sides of the medical aesthetics ecosystem – brands and their clinics.. Unlike traditional distributors, we are not a reseller. We preserve the direct brand-to-practice relationship, maintain price parity and bring together product, education and marketing assets in one beautiful elevated environment.
We are also incredibly proud of beating our forecasts early by signing over 14 brands and receiving incredible validation from leading publications like Forbes, WWD and BeautyMatter.
Any big plans?
Technologically, we are moving from a transaction-focused marketplace to a true connectivity layer. We recently trademarked Aesthetitech, our AI-powered discovery assistant that will enable “conversational shopping” to help practices find the right clinical solutions in a personalized manner.
Short-term: We are hyper-focused on onboarding top global and premium foreign brands (like the French pharmacy-grade line Cosmetics 27) and supporting both their sales teams by taking away their admin and enhancing relevant lead generation.
Long-term: We aim to scale internationally, introduce advanced features to support brand and KOL (Key Opinion Leader) relationships, inventory management and continue bringing on new relevant categories in the longevity sector as health and beauty start to converge!
Pricing:
- Direct Brand Pricing: Because Beauty Rep is a connectivity platform and not a reseller, we maintain strict price parity. Practices buy directly from the brands without distributor markups.
- Practices browse for free, we are compensated by our brand partners.
- Reduced Cost-to-Serve: For brand partners, the platform significantly reduces the traditional 40–60% sales overhead required to service accounts stateside and makes existing sales team more efficient. We also remove the need to house and maintain educational and marketing asset repositories.
