Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathleen O’Connell.
Hi Kathleen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a multimedia artist, educator, and creative entrepreneur based in Carpinteria. My journey has evolved through many chapters, but creativity has always been the thread connecting them all. I studied film and art history before continuing into painting, textile design, and art education, and over the years I’ve built a career blending fine art, teaching, community work, and now art advisory and real estate.
For more than two decades, I’ve taught art in schools, museums, and community programs, working with everyone from toddlers to adults. Being in a classroom full of kids making art still feels magical to me — it’s one of the places I feel most alive. I love helping people reconnect with creativity, experimentation, and confidence through the process of making.
Alongside teaching, I developed my own art practice centered around ocean-inspired abstract painting, natural dyes, printmaking, and mixed media. Nature, emotion, movement, and healing deeply influence my work. Over time, I realized I wasn’t only interested in creating art — I was equally drawn to how art transforms spaces and how creativity shapes the way people live and feel in their homes.
That curiosity led me into art advisory and real estate. I’m currently building a business that supports artists while helping clients thoughtfully curate spaces with original artwork and meaningful design. Studying for my real estate license has been another evolution — one that surprisingly feels connected to everything I’ve done before. To me, homes, art, storytelling, and community all intersect.
Life has taught me that we live many lifetimes within one lifetime. I’ve learned to embrace reinvention instead of fearing it. Every chapter — artist, educator, mother, entrepreneur, advisor — has expanded my understanding of creativity and connection. Right now, I’m focused on building a life and business that blends all of those worlds together in a way that feels authentic, inspiring, and sustainable.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I think one of the hardest parts has been navigating the in-between moments — the periods where you’re evolving, trying new things, and trusting that it will eventually make sense. I’ve had to learn how to balance creativity with survival, motherhood with ambition, and passion with practicality.
There were times I questioned myself for changing directions so much, but looking back, every experience — from fashion, to teaching, to painting, to now stepping into art advisory and real estate — has shaped the bigger picture of who I am. I’ve learned that you can take what you’ve learned in one chapter and translate it into the next. Nothing is wasted experience, and over time I’ve become more confident in standing by my worth and the value of everything I bring with me.
One thing I’m still actively learning is visibility. As an artist, I naturally feel more comfortable creating than promoting myself, so putting myself out there in bigger ways is definitely still a work in progress.
At the same time, I think the challenges are what made my work more meaningful and human. They taught me resilience, adaptability, and how important it is to keep evolving instead of staying stuck in one identity.
We’ve been impressed with Kat Art / Artful Dwelling, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Kat O’Connell Art / Artful Dwelling is a creative lifestyle brand rooted in art, storytelling, interiors, and human connection. Through ocean-inspired abstract paintings, mixed media work, workshops, art education, and art advisory, I help bring more creativity, beauty, and emotion into everyday life.
My work blends fine art with thoughtful living — from creating original artwork and immersive art experiences to helping clients curate meaningful spaces with art and design. Artful Dwelling grew from my love of the intersection between creativity, home, nature, and the way spaces can influence how we feel.
At the heart of everything I do is the belief that art should feel personal, inspiring, and connected to real life.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about Los Angeles is the blend of culture, creativity, and access to beauty and inspiration. I love wandering through used bookstores and discovering old art books and forgotten creative relics. I love that within the same day you can experience the ocean, nature, incredible food, architecture, museums, and so many different artistic perspectives and communities.
Museums especially feel like sanctuaries to me. One of my favorite experiences is visiting Norton Simon Museum and spending time with works like Sam Francis’ colorful, drippy, emotive paintings and murals. There’s something deeply healing and inspiring about being surrounded by that kind of expressive visual energy. Moments like that remind me why creativity matters so much to me.
What I like least is that Los Angeles can sometimes feel overstimulating and image-focused. The pace can be intense, and it’s easy to lose a sense of grounding. That’s why I really value being close enough to experience the culture while still living in a quieter coastal community where I can reconnect to nature and slower moments.
