Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Durden.
Hi Tara, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey to nutrition was anything but a straight line. I originally set out to become a Speech Pathologist, but somewhere along the way I realized it wasn’t the right fit. Nutrition found me instead and looking back, it feels like it was always meant to be.
I went back to school, earned my Bachelor of Science in Nutrition, and then kept going for my Master of Science in Nutrition. From there, I spent the next decade working across just about every healthcare setting you can imagine – hospitals, outpatient clinics, long-term care, and private practice. I loved the work, but corporate medicine eventually started to feel like it was getting in the way of the care I actually wanted to provide.
So I took the leap into full-time private practice, and that’s when everything clicked.
A big part of what shaped my approach is my own health journey. I reached a point where I had to slow down and really relearn how to take care of myself – eating consistently and balanced, prioritizing sleep, finding movement I actually enjoyed, and making space for real self-care. Using a functional nutrition approach, I was able to optimize my own hormones and gut health, and I honestly feel better in my body today than I ever have.
That experience made it crystal clear what I was supposed to be doing. There are so many women out there fighting to feel good in their bodies, and I knew I could help close that gap. Today, I work with women to optimize their hormones, metabolism, mineral status, and gut health – blending holistic and scientific methods to support real, lasting healing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. And I think that’s actually what makes my work meaningful.
The first bump was figuring out my own direction. I had invested time and energy into a path – Speech Pathology – that ultimately wasn’t right for me. Starting over, going back to school, and rebuilding from scratch takes a certain kind of courage, and there were definitely moments of self-doubt along the way.
Then there was the reality of working within traditional healthcare. I spent years showing up fully for my patients inside systems that weren’t always set up to support truly individualized care. The time constraints, the bureaucracy, the one-size-fits-all protocols – it was frustrating when you could see exactly what someone needed but the system wouldn’t allow you to get there. Eventually I had to make the hard decision to walk away from that security and bet on myself.
And then there’s the personal side. My own health struggles weren’t just a footnote – they were a wake-up call. I was a nutrition professional who had to confront the fact that I wasn’t fully walking my own talk. Relearning how to nourish myself, regulate my hormones, and actually rest and recover – that was humbling. But it was also the most important work I’ve ever done, because it made me a far better practitioner.
The road has had real bumps. But every detour led me somewhere more aligned with who I am and the work I’m here to do.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Nutrition Thyme?
Our practice is built around one core belief: that women deserve care that actually gets to the root of what’s going on in their bodies – not just symptom management, not generic advice.
Our team specializes in women’s health using a functional nutrition approach. That means instead of just looking at surface-level symptoms, we dig deeper using advanced lab work and comprehensive intake to understand what’s actually happening hormonally and metabolically. From there, everything is personalized. No cookie-cutter protocols.
What sets us apart is the combination of clinical rigor and holistic thinking. We have the academic and clinical background of a traditionally trained dietitian, but have expanded well beyond that. (BONUS: We’re in network with most major PPO insurance plans, so most of our clients pay $0 out of pocket for sessions.)
We incorporate functional lab testing, mineral analysis, and a whole-body lens that considers sleep, stress, movement, and mindset, not just food. Women come to us after years of being told their labs are “normal” but still feeling exhausted, bloated, moody, or disconnected from their bodies. That’s where we thrive.
We’re also known for making the process feel sustainable and doable. We don’t hand you a rigid plan and send you on your way. We guide, adjust, and support you along the evolving healing journey.
What I’m most proud of, brand-wise, is the trust our clients place in us. Many of them have seen multiple providers and felt dismissed or overlooked. The fact that women find their way to our practice and finally feel heard that means everything.
Our offerings include one-on-one private nutrition counseling, functional lab interpretation, and personalized nutrition and wellness planning. Everything is designed to meet women where they are and help them build a foundation for long-term health – not a quick fix, but lasting transformation.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Loyalty! Without question.
Loyalty to my clients first. When someone trusts me with their health, I take that seriously. I’m not just showing up for the initial consultation and checking a box. I’m invested in their journey, their progress, and their outcome (hence why I wasn’t cut out for clinical hospital settings).
That level of commitment is something my clients feel, and I think it’s a big reason they stay, refer their friends, and actually do the work.
But it goes both ways. The loyalty my clients show in return – coming back, trusting the process even when it’s hard, and sharing my name with the women in their lives – that’s what has built my practice. I don’t take that lightly.
And honestly, loyalty to myself has been just as important. Staying loyal to my values when corporate settings were asking me to compromise them. Staying loyal to my vision for what truly personalized care could look like, even when it would have been easier to stay comfortable.
Loyalty isn’t just a characteristic I admire. It’s the foundation my entire practice is built on. (Very virgo of me)
