Today we’d like to introduce you to Nelya Yildirim.
Hi Nelya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From my earliest memories, I was always drawing—pages and pages. Even though no one in my family was an artist, that passion was always there. Because pursuing art felt uncertain, I chose a more traditional path and became a lawyer in my home country. Later, I came to the U.S. to earn my master’s degree at USC, but deep down, I knew this profession wasn’t fulfilling me. After graduating, I decided to take a risk and fully commit to tattooing. The positive feedback I’ve received from other artists has been incredibly motivating, and it feels like all those years of drawing are finally paying off.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting over in a completely new field meant facing self-doubt almost every day and constantly questioning whether I was good enough. In the beginning, the frustration of not being where I wanted to be was discouraging, and building trust as a new artist was another challenge. Tattooing requires not only artistic skill, but also consistency, patience, and a lot of mental strength.
There were moments when progress felt slow, and balancing the pressure of improving while creating something permanent on someone’s body was overwhelming. That pressure is still there, but I’ve learned to see it as a positive thing—it keeps me focused, humble, and reminds me how much responsibility comes with this work. Deep down, I always knew this was what I was meant to do, and that’s what kept me pushing forward.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in fine line and microrealistic tattoos, especially pieces that tell personal stories and hold special meaning for the people wearing them. What I love most about this style is the level of detail and precision it requires, and the trust clients place in me to turn their memories and ideas into something permanent and meaningful.
I’m still in the process of exploring and discovering different styles within tattooing, because I always want to keep learning and growing as an artist. What I’m most proud of is how far I’ve come by trusting my instincts and committing fully to this path. I think what sets me apart is the care and intention I put into every piece—I don’t just focus on making it look good, but on making sure it feels personal and special for each client.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Following your passion can feel scary and overwhelming, especially when the path ahead is uncertain. No one is going to hand us the life we want—we have to be willing to work for it and take that first step ourselves. There will always be sacrifices and difficult moments, but that’s true of every decision we make in life.
I believe if something truly feels like your calling, it’s worth taking the risk. Growth happens when we step outside of what feels safe, trust ourselves, and stay consistent even when the results don’t come right away. For me, choosing this path has taught me that the biggest reward comes from having the courage to bet on yourself.
