Life & Work with Danny Martinez of South Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny Martinez.

Hi Danny, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Started playing baseball at age of 4 in a local little league, skill level was above the league and transferred pony league where at the age of 7 played in the pony league World Series and received an invitation to the city of Torrance city hall to be recognized by the mayor and received a certificate from the city. At the age of 8 signed up to the LA Rockstars travel baseball program out of Inglewood and competed at a high level for 5-6 seasons. While there Danny was selected by USA baseball to represent the west team as a catcher in the USA baseball Champions cup in Cary, NC. Only 4 catchers were selected to this team out of ca, nv, nm, ut, az and hi. At the age of twelve he attended the legendary and prestigious baseball tournament at Cooperstown NY where competed with his team and hit 6 home runs in 5 games. He continued to compete at a very high level in the national level and some perfect game events like the CA All American Games where his team went undefeated. At the age of 14 he again was selected by USA Baseball as a top catcher in the US southwest region and again competed in Cary NC where his team took the bronze medal at the Champions Cup in 2025. He returned home and prepared for his first high school baseball season at Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary High School where as a freshman was selected to play in the varsity team as a starting second baseman. He finished the season with 4 home runs, 29 rbis on 21 hits in 24 games played. He was leader in runs batted in on his team. After his high school season ended he was immediately selected to attend the very prestigious Hank Aaron invitational program ran by MLB & USA baseball where 200 players in the country attend the Jackie Robinson training complex in Vero Beach Florida to train and play games coached by various former mlb players and trainers. He plans to continue to develop under USA Baseball’s elite environment and is currently preparing himself to again earn a selection to attend the 2026 Champions Cup in Cary, Nc for a third time and possibly conquer the gold medal. He plans to continue to excel both academically and in the sport of baseball with a dream to reach college baseball one day.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been tough. He has endured racism, body shaming including a situation where an actual opposing high school coach once made remarks about Danny during a live game. He has trained very hard sometimes sacrificing family events etc. he’s been that one player who has to prove trainers wrong because of his shorter size. He’s had a trainer turn him down from joining a program and after seeing him succeed elsewhere tried calling back to have Danny join his team.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
He’s known for his baseball skill level. His ability to think ahead of the game. He has been known and recognized as a great teammate to others always willing to help and be there for others. He’s mostly proud of reaching playtime and recognition at mlb and USA baseball events. He’s the player who will work every day to be better than the day before. He’s willing to work hard to reach his goals and knows it’s an every day thing.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Closest friends know the power he has with a baseball bat and the distances he’s able to hit a baseball.
