Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Starky.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Yucca Fins started out of pure necessity. Our Co-Founder, Sean Starky, was a dedicated water athlete and bodysurfer who couldn’t find fins that matched the way he wanted to ride waves. Everything on the market felt like a compromise – too soft, too stiff, uncomfortable, or lacking the level of performance he was looking for. Instead of settling, he decided to make his own.
What began as a personal pursuit quickly turned into something much bigger. At Yucca Fins, we started experimenting with different flex patterns and fit designs, testing everything in real ocean conditions alongside friends and fellow bodysurfers. The brand was never created around hype or trends, it was built around function first. Every product came from actual time in the water and direct feedback from the community using it.
Yucca Fins grew organically through that authenticity. The DIY mindset, constant product refinement, and close connection to the ocean community became the foundation of the brand. Today, Yucca Fins has grown into a globally recognized name within the bodysurfing and surf community, but the mission remains the same: build gear that genuinely works, listen to the people using it, and stay deeply connected to the culture that inspired it from day one.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overall, the journey has actually been pretty smooth, especially because the brand grew organically through the community and genuine product demand. We’ve always stayed very focused on making quality products and staying connected to the people who use them.
One of the bigger challenges has been seeing others imitate parts of what made Yucca Fins stand out like our fun, bright colorways and overall aesthetic that became closely associated with the brand early on. For us, the colors helped bring personality into a space that traditionally felt pretty limited in design. We’ve learned that you can’t really copy authenticity, community, or the years of product refinement behind what we do. That’s what continues to separate Yucca Fins and keeps people connected to the brand.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
(Answering on behalf of our Co-Founder, Sean Starky)
Sean Starky, at his core, is a true gear junkie. Outside of Yucca Fins, he spends a huge amount of time chasing adventure through backcountry skiing, riding dirt bikes through the California mountains, and exploring the outdoors. He’s also developed a deep appreciation for native California plants and landscapes – which is actually where the name “Yucca Fins” came from. If you’re ever in the area, we have a native California plants garden outside of our headquarters!
That curiosity and obsession with gear carries into everything he does professionally. Sean has an instinct for understanding performance, functionality, and design in a very real-world way because he genuinely lives the lifestyle behind the products. Whether it’s surf equipment, outdoor gear, or emerging trends within action sports, he’s constantly researching, testing, and paying attention to what’s next. He’s the kind of person who notices small details others overlook, and that mindset has played a huge role in shaping Yucca’s products and direction.
What sets him apart is that his knowledge comes from firsthand experience and being deeply embedded in the community. He’s always been focused on creating products that actually improve the experience for the people using them, not just products that look good on a shelf.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is the importance of staying authentic and listening closely to the community. From the beginning, We grew because the products solved real problems for real people in the water, and we’ve tried hard not to lose sight of that as the brand has expanded.
Another major lesson has been that being deeply involved in the lifestyle behind the brand matters. Because we genuinely use the products and spend so much time in the ocean and outdoors, we’re able to approach design and innovation from a honest place. That connection has helped guide decisions far better than simply chasing what’s popular or commercially safe.
