Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Kyung.
Sean, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was a student at an Art University in South Korea as a furniture design major. I decided to take some photography classes in the school and ended up really enjoying more than I did my own major. The photography professor recommended me to change my major and I really did want to but my parents disapproved at the time because they felt there was no future being a career photographer. I was already more than halfway through graduating and knowing university was not cheap, I had to agree with them.
After graduating, I somehow ended up moving to the states and worked jobs just to make money but always had photography at the back of my head. Finally found an opportunity to intern under a photographer. Wasn’t getting paid much because I was really there to learn but really loved learning and feeling like I was doing what I liked. Finally felt confident enough to go off on my own and have been working as a freelance photographer.
Has it been a smooth road?
There were many struggles along the way. First, I was struggling to find my own style of photography, and now at times struggling to find different styles. It was also a financial struggle especially in the beginning and when I went off on my own to freelance because building a clientele was not easy.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Studio RedPin story. Tell us more about the business.
My specialty is fashion photography. I think I am most known for lookbook shoots because that’s what clients come to me the most for. I feel what sets me apart is before the actual shoot I make sure to have a detailed meeting with my clients and sometimes several meetings, so I can understand the concept they want and so I can do my best trying to tell their story through my photography. That would also be what I am most proud of.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I feel like there will be more and more need for fashion photographers because the fashion industry is depending more and more on online sales. More online sales will mean companies will need more photos to post online. Because of the fast world of social media, there are probably going to be big changes and trends that I really can not guess but will have to keep up with to survive as a photographer.
