Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Lofgren.
Hi Garrett, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It is great to be back chatting with Voyage LA! To understand where I am today, you really have to look at the bridge between my creative roots and the business side of the industry.
My story starts as a performing musician. I’ve been a bass player for over 25 years, and early on back in Texas, music was my absolute driving force. I originally got my undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, but my heart was always in the studio. During those Huntsville days, I started producing and working on early projects under the GOAT Productions banner, figuring out how to build spaces and make records. That eventually led to the creation of Haven Recording.
When I moved to Los Angeles, the goal was to build a sanctuary for artists. Over the years, I ended up designing and building six different professional recording studios from the ground up—doing everything from wiring the consoles to dialing in the acoustics. Haven Recording grew into something I am incredibly proud of. We built a phenomenal reputation, worked with platinum-selling artists, tracked tens of millions of streams, and were even recognized among the Top 32 recording studios in Los Angeles by the LA Times.
But as Haven grew, I noticed a recurring theme. Independent artists and producers would come in with incredible talent, but they were completely lost when it came to the business side of their careers. They needed help with release strategies, copyright law, sync licensing, and workflow optimization. I realized that my specialty wasn’t just behind the mixing desk; it was in the business of operations and legal strategy.
That realization prompted me to pursue my Master of Science in Music Industry from USC. I wanted to formalize my expertise so I could offer a higher level of strategic guidance.
That brings us to today. Over the last five years, I have successfully transitioned my focus from the daily operations of running recording studios to full-time Music Business Consulting. Earlier this year, I launched my dedicated consulting platform. Today, I use my background in audio engineering, studio design, and relationship management to help artists, studios, and marketing organizations navigate the modern music landscape—whether that means optimizing their business workflows, securing sync placements, or scaling their operations. I’m taking everything I learned building Haven Recording and using it to build up the next generation of music entrepreneurs.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road, but I think any entrepreneur or creative will tell you that the friction is exactly where the growth happens.
Early on, the biggest physical and mental struggle was the sheer grit required to build Haven Recording. Designing and building six different studios from the ground up is exhausting. You are dealing with the highly technical, hands-on aspects of wiring analog consoles and dialing in the acoustics, while simultaneously trying to manage client schedules and keep a business afloat. It was a massive grind.
Then came the challenge of the pivot. When I realized I needed to shift from the creative side to the business and strategy side, I knew I had to level up my formal education. Pursuing my Master’s degree at USC while actively running a studio and welcoming my daughter in the fall of 2022 required a level of time management I didn’t even know I possessed. Balancing the demands of a growing family with a rigorous academic program and an evolving career was easily one of the most intense, sleep-deprived seasons of my life.
There has also been the ongoing challenge of simply adapting to how quickly the modern music industry moves. As a consultant and a relationship manager, you can easily get buried in administrative overhead if you aren’t careful. I had to learn how to aggressively optimize my own workflows just to survive. That struggle actually became a massive asset, as it pushed me to adopt AI tools, automated drafting software, and custom systems to streamline my processes.
Ultimately, every single one of those hurdles—the late nights wiring patch bays, the balancing act of grad school and fatherhood, the workflow bottlenecks—gave me the exact real-world experience I now rely on to help my consulting clients avoid those same pitfalls.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At its core, my consulting business is about bridging the gap between world-class creative output and sustainable business architecture. I specialize in music business strategy, workflow optimization, and relationship management for independent artists, producers, and recording studios. Through my platform, Master of Music Industry, I offer a range of services from sync licensing strategy and operational consulting to helping clients implement cutting-edge tools to scale their businesses.
What sets me apart is that my advice isn’t just theoretical. I am not someone who only studied the industry in a classroom. I have been a gigging bass player for over 25 years. I know what it means to be an independent artist trying to make a living. I know what it takes to physically build a creative space, having designed and wired six recording studios including Haven Recording in Huntsville Texas and Los Angeles a few times, and Venue T.E.N. In Palm Springs. On the business side, my background managing high-level donor relations and working as a Relationship Manager for Shriners Children’s Hospitals at Synergy Direct Marketing Solutions has given me a deep understanding of how to maintain professional partnerships and drive revenue. I combine that entrenched, hands-on experience with the high-level legal and strategic frameworks I mastered at USC.
I am also heavily focused on modernization. I integrate AI workflow tools, automated drafting software, and even customized physical automation—like using automated pin-plotting machines to scale personalized correspondence—to help my clients reclaim their time. I teach creatives how to run their businesses with the efficiency of a tech startup without losing their artistic soul.
Brand-wise, I am most proud of my authenticity. Whether it was GOAT Productions in Huntsville, Haven Recording in LA, or now my consulting firm, the throughline has always been about empowering the creator. I built Haven to be a physical sanctuary for artists to create; I built this consulting business to be a strategic sanctuary for them to thrive.
I want your readers to know that the modern music business is incredibly complex, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. You don’t have to choose between being a great artist and being a smart entrepreneur. My offerings are designed to take the friction out of the business side—whether you need help structuring your studio’s daily operations, optimizing your release strategy, or automating your administrative workflows—so you can get back to doing what you do best: making music.
What makes you happy?
What makes me happy? It really comes down to a balance of family, hands-on creativity, and the satisfaction of empowering others.
At the foundational level, my biggest source of joy is my family. My wife, Ashley, and I welcomed our daughter, Josephine, in the fall of 2022. Being a father and getting to watch her grow and discover the world puts everything else into perspective. No matter how crazy the music industry gets or how packed my consulting schedule is, being present with them is my ultimate grounding force.
I also find a lot of happiness in stepping away from the screens and the business strategy to just work with my hands. I am big into automotive maintenance and classic cars. Right now, I spend time wrenching on a Dodge Magnum and a Ford Mustang. After spending all day in the high-stakes, hyper-digital world of modern music consulting, there is something incredibly therapeutic about the purely mechanical, tactile process of fixing up a car. I also love getting out on the golf course as a mental reset—I even have a lot of fun shooting and producing social media content around my rounds.
Musically, strapping on one of my five or six-string basses—usually my Warwick or ESP LTD—and just playing for the sake of playing still brings me the exact same joy it did 25 years ago.
And professionally? What truly makes me happy is the “aha” moment with a client. When an independent artist finally understands how to monetize their catalog, or when I help a studio owner automate their workflows so they can actually take a weekend off… that’s the best feeling. I spent years building physical sanctuaries for artists to record in; now, seeing them build sustainable, successful lives out of their art is what keeps me going.
