Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Wolosoff.
Katie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been enamored by movies and television for as long as I can remember. From a young age, I knew I wanted to be part of that world which led me to spend more than a decade working as a TV development executive, shaping stories for a living.
While my passion for storytelling never changed, after years of long timelines, layers of approval and countless letdowns, I became disillusioned with the process of trying to get TV shows made. I started to crave something more immediate, a space to follow a creative impulse just because I could. So, for the first time in my adult life, I allowed myself to consider doing something different. With a camera always in hand, I realized I didn’t just want to shape stories on a page, I wanted to create them, too.
So at 32, I made the risky decision to shift gears to pursue a more personal and hands on form of storytelling: photography.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not! I went from being a full-time producer with structure and an established network to becoming a remote freelancer, learning a new craft and building a business largely on my own. I was a beginner and a student again, which came with both fear and a real sense of possibility.
Ultimately, I had to ask myself, ‘What do I want my life to look like, and what am I willing to do to get it?’ Choosing this path meant choosing creativity and freedom over certainty and security, and that hasn’t always been easy. There have definitely been moments of self-doubt and comparison, but I always try to remember one of the best pieces of advice I’ve gotten: creativity isn’t a competition.
Photography has allowed me to reconnect with what I love most: telling stories, capturing the feeling of a moment and creating work that might resonate or inspire. For the first time in a long time, I feel creatively reinvigorated in a way I didn’t know was possible, which has made any fear, judgement or growing pain worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer and visual creator but I also consider myself a creative partner. I’m deeply invested in the larger vision and love collaborating to bring a concept or brand to life through still imagery, short-form video or a mix of both. No matter what I’m shooting, my work is always driven by the feeling behind the frame. I naturally approach projects through a narrative lens and tend to visualize everything cinematically: the light, the color, the backdrop, the movement and the emotional tone.
I love blending candid with curated moments, and I especially love portraiture because it feels closest to visual storytelling. You get to build a scene for scratch, create an atmosphere and bring out the essence of a person through light, texture, wardrobe and composition. Creative portraiture is ultimately about finding the best way to tell someone’s story in a single moment, and it’s what I hope to become especially known for.
I’m still very early in my career and I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of the work I want to do. I’m constantly learning, challenging myself and exploring new ways to tell stories through images. I don’t think style is something static, it develops over time and continues to shift as you do and that sense of evolution is what keeps this work exciting.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Creating, traveling and being surrounded by the people I love.
To me, that’s all there is.
Creativity, adventure and connection.
