Community Highlights: Meet Marquell Byrd of Compton Art & History Museum

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquell Byrd.

Marquell, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started as a producer and storyteller — working through music, film, and documentaries to capture real narratives from our communities. Over time, I realized storytelling couldn’t just live on screens — it needed a physical home. That led to co-founding the Compton Art & History Museum, and from that vision came AMIEH — the belief in building A Museum In Every Hood — making culture, history, and representation accessible where people actually live.

Today I’m focused on growing the museum, archiving stories, and expanding that vision so communities can preserve and see themselves reflected in their own narratives. The journey has always been rooted in service, collaboration, and making sure our stories are seen, valued, and remembered.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nah, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. Building something rooted in community means figuring things out without always having resources, navigating funding challenges, and constantly advocating for why cultural work matters. There were times of stretching capacity, wearing multiple hats, and pushing forward vision before infrastructure was fully there.

But those struggles built the foundation. They strengthened relationships, clarified purpose, and reinforced the commitment to our community, making sure access to culture, history, and storytelling isn’t treated like a luxury, but something every community deserves.

We’ve been impressed with Compton Art & History Museum, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I work at the intersection of storytelling and cultural preservation. Through the Compton Art & History Museum and my production work, I document narratives, archive local history, produce media, and create platforms for artists and communities to see themselves reflected. We specialize in exhibitions, archival storytelling, and programs that connect art, history, and opportunity.

What sets us apart is authenticity — this work is built from within community, not from the outside looking in. I’m most proud of building a brand people trust and recognize as real, all grounded in the vision of AMIEH — A Museum In Every Hood.

At the end of the day, readers should know this isn’t just programming or production — it’s about building spaces where stories are preserved, culture is valued, and communities shape their own narrative.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
By helping us purchase the standalone location of the Compton Art & History Museum.
