Russell Hartstein of Los Angeles on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Russell Hartstein. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Russell, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Pet parents who get it, get it. How many details and nuances are there to optimize a pet’s learning and boarding, and training experience.

The details to optimize a pet’s experience, and health to thrive in a boot camp environment require every detail of the home environment and outside environment to be analyzed thoroughly, then measured against science and evidence to make sure a pet can learn in the quickest time frame possible while being stress-free and healthy, and safe.

Combining these factors with each unique pet’s personalities and temperaments is an art as much as a science.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I started Fun Paw Care Dog Training in Los Angeles because there were no one-on-one, non-volume-based, optimal care dog training professionals in the industry.

Saddened that there were no safe or trusted animal behaviorist experts who provided comprehensive and optimal pet care for dog boarding and training, taking into account a dog’s behavior, training, and boarding, daycare, health, nutrition, and enrichment, was the reason I started the business over 30 years ago.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Meeting the Dalai Lama and working with my late friend and hero, Dr Jane Goodall.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
My dogs and cats. Hence, one of the main reasons I became vegan and began my career as an animal behaviorist.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
Dalai Lama, Dr Jane Goodall, MLK, Gandhi, Thích Nhất Hạnh

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Nothing. Everything I do follows my alignment with The Nobel Eightfold Path. The right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration.
