Meet Kristin Miracle-Lewis of The Garage Collective in Laguna Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Miracle-Lewis.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have a background in real estate and then moved on to be a style merchandiser at Quiksilver. I read a book called “Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert and it changed my life. I knew I was meant to do something truly creative. In my own life, I loved home decor and style and I knew I was really good at sourcing. So, I started hosting pop-ups in my garage for friends and family. When I started booking myself out with additional dates and selling out of all my goods, I decided to go for a brick and mortar location.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think for the most part it’s been easy, I think what I have personally struggled with is the competitive nature of the business. I really try to keep laser focused on what I am doing and my individual goals, but there is definitely distractions. I have learned who to keep close to my inner circle. I’m a big champion for other women and business owners and I’m lucky to be surrounded by some fantastic business owners within the collective. Part of what the Garage Collective is a collaborative boutique for other smaller shops under one roof.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Garage Collective – what should we know?
We are a coastal interior goods and gift shop. We carry product from global and local artisan makers with a story as well as bespoke pillows designed by me, handmade textiles, and vintage rugs sourced from street makers in Morocco, India and Turkey. I source everything myself and also offer locally found antique furnishings. I’m most proud of the fact that I do special things for my customers, we definitely go above and beyond. I source things custom to what they are looking for and I work hard to find them exactly what they want.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My biggest mentor is my mom, she has an amazing business ethic. She’s just a happy person and a hard worker. Having that instilled in me from a young age and being raised by a strong independent woman has been instrumental in my success.
