Conversations with Sofia D’Marco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia D’Marco.

Hi Sofia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in San José, Costa Rica, and today I’m a Los Angeles–based, award-winning actress, writer, and co-founder of Cathartic Realism—a storytelling movement dedicated to transforming personal trauma into purpose-driven art.

My journey in Hollywood began over a decade ago when I started training under internationally acclaimed acting coach Ivana Chubbuck. She encouraged me to write and star in what would become my first film, this is how i lost my virginity—a raw and deeply personal story inspired by my lived experience. Directed by Ivana’s daughter, Claire Chubbuck, the film became the foundation for a revolutionary creative methodology.

I was the first actor to fully pioneer the process that is now known as Cathartic Realism—merging narrative with shame-resilience theory and the Chubbuck Technique to reclaim personal truth through performance. In the process of creating the film, I discovered something far more life-changing than a career path: I found healing, agency, forgiveness, and a calling.

Today, as an accredited teacher and youth mentor at Chubbuck Studios, I empower young artists to channel their pain into strength and their vulnerabilities into powerful performances. I believe that storytelling is not just entertainment—it is a radical act of transformation. Through Cathartic Realism, my mission is to champion a future where speaking your truth isn’t just brave… it’s groundbreaking.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A smooth road? Not even close. The entertainment industry has a way of testing you, of revealing who you are through every rejection, every closed door, every moment you wonder if you should give up. I’ve earned my share of battle scars along the way.

As an immigrant, as a woman, and as a survivor, nothing about my path has been handed to me. Finding my voice meant confronting fears I spent years trying to outrun. It meant learning that to create art rooted in truth, you sometimes have to walk back into the darkness. But I’ve come to believe that anything truly meaningful requires perseverance. Those struggles are the price of purpose. And if the cost of being here, to tell stories that matter, is a few scars—then I’ll keep showing up to the fight every single time.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Acting is my true north. It’s the way I make sense of the world and give meaning to the experiences that have shaped me. I’ve spent over a decade training and working within the Ivana Chubbuck Studio, and that mentorship has deeply informed the artist I’ve become. The Chubbuck Technique is rooted in turning pain into purpose, and that philosophy has become my approach to every character I take on—I don’t just play roles, I live them from a place of personal truth.

The work I’m most proud of is our first film, this is how i lost my virginity. It was the greatest healing moment of my life—allowing me to reclaim power after sexual trauma and transform something that once silenced me into something that now empowers me. The film went on to receive over twenty awards and special recognitions at festivals around the world, but the real victory was the freedom and forgiveness I found through the filmmaking process.

What truly sets me apart is the union of depth and faith I bring into my work. I call it my “Jesus sprinkle”—a spiritual backbone that fuels me with redemption and the belief that every story has the potential to transform. I’m committed to roles that challenge, confront, and reveal. My mission as an actress is to create work that resonates on a soul level—where courage, vulnerability, and purpose meet. Because storytelling isn’t just what I do… it’s the calling God put on my life.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is this: Success isn’t about booking the job — it’s about building the work. The most fulfilling art happens when you’re creating with those who inspire you to be braver than you were yesterday. The industry is designed to make you feel isolated and competitive, as if there’s only room for a select few. But the truth is, Los Angeles is full of wildly talented artists who are craving connection just as much as you are. When I stopped waiting by the phone and started creating, everything changed.

Finding your people — your creative family — is everything. When you align with collaborators who share your values, your work becomes more honest, more daring, more alive. That’s how Cathartic Realism was born: through community, trust, and the belief that we rise higher when we rise together.
