Today we’d like to introduce you to Miles Frank.
Miles, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I heard my next door neighbor’s band playing this awesome music and I wanted to see what was going on, but my skills on the drums weren’t quite developed yet. It was 2004 and I had just started playing on my first set of Ludwig’s. I knew I wanted to quit playing baseball and play the drums instead but I didn’t know what that meant for my future. By 2007, my drum skills were improving and my neighbors band was in need of a new drummer. I climbed the fence one day and played music for the first time with Pat, my current best bandmate and longest running friend. The band was called shotty and once I joined I knew what I was going to be doing for the foreseeable future. Today I am still in that band living in LA pursuing our dreams. We both play in other side projects and work full time as musicians. Even though I can barely afford rent, i’m still doing what my 13 year old self dreamt of back in my Seattle basement.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth, no. Struggles, yes. I have found the most rewarding yet the most difficult part of the musical journey to be the friends and relationships with other musicians. A band is but a group of crazy people who chose to work together despite their differences, and maintaining those relationships is harder than any drum fill or guitar lick. I’ve lost friends along the way, gained new ones, and had to navigate a world full of extremely talented yet fragile egos. But it’s worth it! There’s nothing like the stage and I was born to perform.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I play the drums. Simple but not easy. My primary gig right now is playing in a time traveling cover band called The Flux Capacitors. I’m also the current drummer for the psych-rock band Acid Tongue, and I continue to play drums for my band shotty. We are currently recording and releasing an album with producer Joe ‘The Butcher’ Nicolo. Look him up, he’s the stuff of legends. Other than that I’m most proud of my ability to adapt to changes Keeping a flexible mind and body and not getting stuck in my ways. There’s a lot of egos in showbiz, and I hope I don’t let mine get in the way of being a compassionate human being.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I don’t think about risk. I just show up prepared to do my job and everything else falls into place.
