Check Out Tristan Morris’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tristan Morris.

Hi Tristan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Initially I started screen printing and hand dyeing blank clothing, but I always knew that wasn’t my end goal. I had a hunger to evolve my skillset. I remember getting invited to Tommy Hilfiger’s corporate office in NYC, and it was mind blowing to see how much we had in common. When seen my outfit I had screen printed and dyed, he really embraced me and encouraged me with some inspiring words. From that moment on I spent time in NYC grabbing every bit of knowledge and inspiration I could get. From buying books, magazines, and reference pieces to having conversations with employees of my favorite luxury stores and visiting museums. One day, I stumbled across a sewing machine at the thrift store for $20, and I knew it was time to finally give sewing a try.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all! I wish someone would’ve told me I was getting myself into hahaha. But on a serious note, there’s beauty in the struggle. You have to fall in love with the process. When I first started sewing I thought I was pretty bad. I wasn’t that good with understanding patterns, and my line work was sub par. It took me some time to even get comfortable sharing my work. In the mist of learning I started reverse engineering which helped me tremendously. By reverse engineering, I was able to see a garment was made from taking it apart, and that gave me way better direction on how a garment was made.

Another struggle was to stay true to my ethos. I wanted to be a mysterious label. I wanted Vice Paradise to be known, but not oversaturated. I never wanted the label to get to a point where a brand gets very popular, and then it dies just because influencers feel like it’s played out. So by staying true, I had to make certain sacrifices like not doing too many collabs, or trying to force my clothing on public figures for fast growth. I’d rather it happen organically.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I design, style, and creative direct for Vice Paradise. I wouldn’t say specialize, because there will always be room for improvement no matter what, but humbly I feel like I’m very good at all three. All three equally complement each other. The aspect of up-cycling, textures, color theory, story telling with the brand are very intentional.

I believe I’m known for my personal style, but as of recent I’ve been getting more recognition for my work.

I’m just proud of the growth. The evolution. I’m making of all this happen without a college degree. Some may use it to discredit me, but I look at it as blessing. There are so many roads to get to the same destination, and that’s how I look at life. Often, I am in the same rooms as people with fashion degrees so I’m truly grateful. It’s a confirmation that I’m doing something right. It’s been a honor to have worked with CAFE x New Era Cap, and Westside Gunn x Pray For Haiti .

What sets me apart from others is the avant-garde approach of deconstruction and recontextualization, using unconventional materials within Vice Paradise. I challenge consumerism, and created a brand identity that emphasizes conceptualism over celebrity.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Being around family and friends or grabbing some Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles before going to a Dodgers game haha
