Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Cho.
Hi Sandra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my career as a financial advisor at UBS Financial Services in 2003 in Troy, Michigan with ten other new advisors. After two years, I was one of only two new advisors left and could see the light at the end of the tunnel. I had started to establish myself as a successful financial advisor. Unfortunately, it was then that my husband died from a car accident the day before our second child was born. This tragedy was a pivotal moment as I had to decide whether I was going to continue pursuing a career in financial services.
I moved back to Los Angeles, California with my 3-year-old son and newborn daughter. I transitioned to working as a financial advisor at a bank, which had better hours for a mother of young children. Having grown up extremely poor but making it to the upper middle-class through the hard work of my single mother, I resolved to continue with my goal of helping others achieve their financial dreams. I worked an average of 10 hours a day, six days a week with the help of my mother, who helped care for my children. Within a couple years, I rose to become one of the top advisors in the region. Within five years, I was one of the top advisors in the state of California for the bank and selected as one of first 50 advisors in the nation to spearhead the Chase Private Client program. After 10 years of serving bank clients, I left the bank and founded Pointwealth Capital Management, rising to Chairman’s Club, which is awarded to less than 5% of the top financial advisors nationwide with LPL Financial Services by production.
Two other points worth mentioning that shaped my career is my service time in the Navy Reserve and my extensive global travels.
Just prior to starting my financial services career at UBS, I joined the U.S. Navy Reserve with the intent of giving back to my country for providing my family with a new beginning after the Korean War. During my time in the reserves, I performed over 35 Navy funeral honors and was awarded two Navy Marine Achievement medals, one of the highest medals in the Navy. I believe that my military training has strengthened my resiliency to help my clients through difficult markets and life events, and provided a high ethical benchmark and work ethic.
Having traveled to over 50 countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America solo, my trove of cultural experiences help me relate with clients from all walks of life. I wouldn’t be the person and advisor I am today without these events, sometimes difficult and tragic, that have shaped my life and career.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Losing my husband at the age of 32 the day before our second child was born was painful, and yet it gave me perspective to help relate to and assist future clients who went through great loss. Growing up impoverished but unconditionally supported helps me understand money for what it is, a safety net, and investments and planning as the means to help people achieve security.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
