Today we’d like to introduce you to Stef DiOrio.
Stef, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2008, I moved from my hometown of Philadelphia to Los Angeles to pursue my lifelong passion for saving dogs. My journey to founding The Social Dog LA has been shaped by years of hands-on work and volunteering across a wide range of animal care environments.
My deep knowledge of dog behavior and nutrition developed through my service with several Los Angeles–based dog rescues and foundations, along with countless classes, seminars, and mentorships in a city where the growing crisis of homeless dogs is impossible to ignore.
Over time, I witnessed an alarming number of dogs being surrendered or abandoned due to behavioral challenges or breed-specific discrimination. That realization inspired me to dedicate myself to the most complex, misunderstood, at-risk and dangerous dogs, a path that ultimately led me to THE ZEN DOG, where I became one of the Lead Teachers and co-star of Nat Geo WILD’s “Dog: Impossible.” There, I discovered my true calling: helping dogs and their humans find freedom through understanding and connection.
After the pandemic, THE ZEN DOG relocated to another state and I felt called to continue helping the dogs of Los Angeles; the ones labeled anti-social, aggressive, fearful, or reactive. These are the dogs that struggle to make friends, who find the outside world overwhelming, or who’ve been turned away from daycares and dog parks. I wanted to help them deepen their relationships with their humans and rediscover a sense of safety, confidence, and connection.
From that passion, The Social Dog LA was born. We are a modern social club devoted to our canine companions. Our mission is simple: to support dogs of all kinds in their pursuit of friendship. All degrees of social skills are welcome in our club and we never discriminate based on breed. We are sensitive to each dog’s temperament, play style, and unique social needs. The Social Dog LA offers curated play services, individualized social rehabilitation, social walks, and group play. We teach without forceful methods or tools, believing that healthy relationships are built and strengthened through positive action and above all, respect.
I was the proud pawrent of two rescues: Gloria, a kind and compassionate Chihuahua, and Amala, a senior socialite Husky mix I found on the side of the freeway. Both have since passed, but they remain my soul dogs, and the greatest teachers of many dogs whose lessons continue to guide everything I do.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Continuing to follow my passion for helping “aggressive” dogs has been a journey shaped by continually saying yes to opportunities that allowed me to be of service to both dogs and their humans. It’s been smooth in the sense that each experience has brought me closer to understanding and deeply connecting with these dogs, but not without plenty of mistakes and learning moments along the way.
It goes about as smoothly as it can when you’re working with dogs that want to bite you or other dogs! I consider myself lucky to have only been seriously bitten once over the course of 15 years, though there have been many close calls. Through it all, I stand by the belief that when a dog or human gets hurt, it’s almost always due to human error, not because the dog is “bad.” I believe that every dog, is a Social Dog.
Another challenge has been staying true to my commitment to working without forceful tools or methods. I’ve faced plenty of opposing opinions about using prong collars, electronic collars etc, but in my experience, with hundreds of dogs, I’ve never needed them. The results speak for themselves: trust and connection built through respect, patience, and communication.
I’m also grateful to be in Los Angeles; a city full of dogs, dog lovers, and, among them, a large community of people living with reactive dogs. I always remind people that they’re not alone. The reason you don’t see many others out there with dogs like yours is because everyone’s doing exactly what you’re doing; staying inside and avoiding other dogs! Ha!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Social Dog LA is a modern social club devoted to our canine companions, especially the ones who don’t always fit in. We specialize in helping dogs who are labeled “reactive,” “aggressive,” or “antisocial”; the ones who struggle to make friends, feel nervous around other dogs or humans, or have been turned away from daycares and play groups.
What sets us apart is our approach: we teach dogs without the use of forceful tools or methods. We don’t rely on prong collars, shock collars, or punishment-based techniques. Instead, our philosophy is rooted in respect, relationship, and trust-building. Every dog has the capacity for connection, and my job is to help them rediscover it.
My services are designed around that philosophy. I offer curated social play, individual social rehabilitation, social walks, and group play experiences. They are all carefully structured to meet each dog’s unique temperament and social comfort level. Every session is guided by the goal of expanding a dog’s world safely, at their pace, and helping them form genuine, positive social connections.
I’m most proud that The Social Dog LA has become a safe haven for dogs who were once misunderstood or excluded. Seeing a dog who used to bark and lunge now able to walk calmly beside a friend, or even nap next to another dog, is the greatest reward.
At its core, The Social Dog LA is about belonging. We believe every dog deserves a place where they feel understood, respected, and connected. We believe “Every dog is a Social Dog. Join the club!”
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
In addition to our social programs, I also offer private in-home training, one-on-one walking sessions, and free consultations. Whether your dog needs help building confidence, working through reactivity, or simply expanding their social world, we’re here to help.
We’ve also built a growing community of dog parents who understand the challenges of living with reactive or sensitive dogs. You and your dog are not alone and you don’t have to navigate it by yourself.
