Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Delgado.
Hi Sandra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started doing nails because I had a nail tech five or six years ago that was insanely good and fast and I remember telling her I wanted to learn how to do nails because it seemed easy to learn the technique of acrylic and the money was good, but I was a leasing consultant at the time where I was able to get my first apartment and discounted rent. At that time I was working in Inglewood area and living in Echo Park which was fun but not fun at night. There was constant drive-bys and I just wasn’t happy with my leasing consultant job because it was very repetitive, I had the same route and same routine every day . I just didn’t know when would be the right time to take that leap of faith until I moved back to the valley for a leasing consultant job opportunity just to get fired within three months and thankfully I qualified for unemployment. I moved back home with my parents and started nail school for the next four months. Soon after I was done with nail school, I tried to practice on anybody that would allow me to practice on. I did take a couple of clients at home but the summer was approaching and that meant I had to put my dog outside all day and of course I didn’t want to do that so I applied to many leasing jobs and i got the job and was fired again. At that point, I didn’t want to become a leasing consultant again because honestly, I was tired of getting fired. I then started doing Instacart as a side hustle while trying to practice nails.. I then got scouted for a leasing job that ended up being the best leasing job I’ve ever had because it ended up funding my entire business because of their commission structure, it was very lucrative if you worked your butt off. I was able to get my own suite in Woodland Hills while working my 9-5. I’d work Tuesdays through Saturdays 10 AM till 5 PM and I would take clients during the week at 6 PM and clients on my days off. I was able to build my brand to what it is now with the money I was making from my 9 to 5. I then got fired for the third time but I was checked out from that job because I wanted to focus on nails. I became full-time March 1, 2023. Getting fired three times were the best things that ever happened to me because i wouldn’t be where I am today. Everything truly happens for a reason.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road at all, when I became full time I had nothing but time on my hands to get as many clients as i could. I started posting more on social media but even then the clients weren’t coming so it was getting hard to pay my weekly rent. Eventually, for a little time, I was becoming very stressed so I decided to move to an office space in hopes that the clients I had would follow me there. Most did follow me since I was only 5 mins further. With more practice and intense research and taking online courses, clients would refer me a lot, which helped my business stay afloat.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I specialize in Russian manicures. A Russian manicure is a precise, dry nail technique that uses an electric file to meticulously remove excess cuticle and surrounding skin, creating a very clean and flawless finish. This technique allows for the gel polish to be applied incredibly close to the nail bed, which makes the manicure last longer as the “grow out” is less noticeable. While it results in a beautiful, seamless look and can last four weeks. What separates me apart from others is that I provide a private open and safe space for women where they can come and relax and talk about anything that is on their mind with no judgment. I am most proud of my brand because it’s always growing with new clients, educating myself and always updating my space to make clients feel more comfortable.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am self taught, I learned how to do the Russian technique by researching and stalking a lot of Instagram pages and watching videos of the products and tools they used. I’ve met a lot of Russian nail techs that have given me tips and tricks to improve my Russian technique.
