We’re looking forward to introducing you to Victoria Theodore. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Victoria, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
On an ideal day, I go directly into a 20 minute meditation, then I journal, write a quick poem and head to the keyboard. If I can do that everyday, I’m the happiest person possible. Usually though, I get slammed with emails and texts asking me to do something. I’m doing my best to get that under control so I can return to my ideal… but it’s not easy!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a professional pianist, singer, songwriter, composer, arranger, orchestrator and author. I have spent most of my career working as a support artist to icons, true masters of the arts, in particular, Stevie Wonder and Beyoncé. I have traveled the world many times with both of them and am now on my own artistic journey.
My partner, Dave Tweedie and I started our band, EnSPirits, in 2019, got stymied by the pandemic in 2020, and then started over in 2023. So far, we’ve performed our music to enthusiastic audiences from Los Angeles to New York, the San Francisco Bay Area to Houston, Abu Dhabi / Dubai to London, and Berlin to Kyoto. We have music available on all platforms but encourage our fans to purchase downloads and merch from us directly, whether online or in person at our shows.
I’m also a composer in musical theater. I worked as a music director for many years, and eventually felt the calling to be on the creative side of the table. So far, I’ve had one successful commercial production as a composer (Co-Founders, which had sold out shows and great reviews), and another show, MARIAN, which was selected for a preeminent musical theater festival in January 2026. We’re also waiting for confirmation of a potential MARIAN commercial production in the fall of 2026.
In the meantime, EnSPirits has a new single releasing on September 28. “One Thing” is a dreamy confession of romantic satisfaction. Enjoy!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that has served it’s purpose is the woman who lived in the shadows, toiling diligently to support the vision of others, with meager compensation and often even less acknowledgment. She is done and has already left the building. The new me recognizes her value and only accepts work that puts, to quote Beyoncé, “some respect on my check”, and in which my voice is appreciated for it’s authority and intentionality of excellence.
The demure, considerate, deferential, self-sacrificing part of me had to go. She served her purpose, so I released her.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering through doing more than what was expected has taught me that I must treat my health, stamina, ideas and peace with absolute respect and maintain stringent boundaries around them. I’ve always been a team player, but all too often, at my own expense. I would have never learned that I can’t “do it all” had I not failed so spectacularly. I nearly broke myself trying to be a team player and “save the day”.
Now I know that the correct answer is sometimes “no”:
No – if the money isn’t right.
No – if there’s not sufficient support.
No – if I’m not working with people who truly believe in giving credit where credit is due.
No – to people who don’t see me as an asset and want to keep me in a box, or worse, use me as a token.
And I’ve learned that the only automatic “yes” is to myself.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to believe that I can do anything, no matter what. Now I know that I can do anything, with the right support. It’s a small, but vital shift. I will always believe that I’m fully capable of anything, but now I know to always insist on proper support. I am magic, but even magic needs rest!
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when sitting at my piano, sight-reading beautiful classical piano or playing one of my favorite jazz tunes. There’s nothing better. I’ve had my piano since I was 15 years old. My relationship with my piano is older than almost all of my other relationships. She’s just as wonderful as when I first received her as a gift from my family.
