Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyx Galura.
Hi Alyx, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My path into therapy has been a winding road. I studied psychology in college and worked in entertainment marketing for over a decade, but my own experiences in therapy over the years showed me how powerful healing can be — and inspired me to become a therapist myself.
In my 20s, I injured my back while training for a marathon. After a year of chronic pain and surgery, I was told I needed a new hobby. That’s when I discovered hiking. Nature became my space for healing — not just from surgery, but also from a tough breakup. Summiting Mt. Whitney inspired me to create Shoestring Adventures, offering guided camping and backpacking trips to make the outdoors more accessible. Seeing how much healing others found in nature made me realize I wanted to help people on a deeper level.
At 35, I closed my business, left marketing behind, and went back to school to become a therapist — during the pandemic, no less. I was pregnant during my second year, and my husband and I were expecting a daughter, which made the journey even more challenging, but it also taught me a lot about perseverance and prioritizing what really matters. Changing my career was a huge leap of faith, but one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not smooth! On a personal level, I went through a toxic relationship that really changed me — it taught me how hard, and how possible, it is to rebuild. That experience drives me today to walk alongside my clients as they do the same.
Starting over in my 30s was also scary and exhausting. Graduate school after being out in the “real world” was intimidating, and financially it was a big adjustment.
Working in community mental health was eye-opening. I met incredible people facing houselessness, reentry from incarceration, or substance use challenges, all while navigating mental health struggles. It was rewarding work, but also heartbreaking to see how often the system lets people down.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I run a private practice called Life Reclaimed Therapy. The name is personal because that’s exactly what I had to do — reclaim my life after a difficult chapter.
I mainly work with women navigating big transitions: a divorce or breakup, a career shift, becoming a parent, or losing a loved one. Many of my clients are healing from toxic relationships, so we focus on boundaries, identity, and self-esteem.
I’m a trauma-informed therapist, and I don’t just focus on thoughts and feelings — I also bring the body into the healing process. I’m trained in somatic therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), so clients learn how to calm their nervous system, process trauma, and build healthier patterns.
Outside of therapy sessions, I share free resources on Instagram about recovery from emotional abuse — things like attachment styles, communication, and self-care. Not everyone is ready or able to start therapy right away, so it feels important to create tools and spaces anyone can access. I’ve also started hosting networking events for fellow therapists, like playdates for therapist parents and hikes, to build community and support each other in balancing our personal and professional lives.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
It’s never too late to start over. I rebuilt my life after a difficult relationship, then changed careers at 35. I’ve watched countless clients do the same in their own ways.
Being a mom to a toddler has also shaped how I approach my work and life. I want to raise our daughter knowing she deserves respect, and to model for her what it looks like to stand up for herself and reclaim her power. I’m also in a healthy, loving relationship — I married my best friend — which reminds me every day that healing opens the door to connection and joy. I want my daughter to grow up seeing that love and respect are possible.
If you take one thing away from my story, I hope it’s this: you are worthy of respect, peace, and love. And sometimes reclaiming your life starts with one small step in that direction.
