Hidden Gems: Meet Payal Sawhney of Saahas for Cause

Today we’d like to introduce you to Payal Sawhney.

Hi Payal, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Saahas for Cause began in 2019 with a simple but powerful vision, to support South Asian immigrants in Southern California by addressing challenges they often faced in silence. What started as a grassroots effort quickly grew into a structured nonprofit under the leadership of its founder, Payal Sawhney. In the early days, the focus was on helping survivors of domestic violence and offering culturally sensitive support services. Over time, the scope expanded as the needs of the community became clearer, covering mental health, senior wellness, youth empowerment, and broader community outreach. Today, Saahas serves thousands across Los Angeles and Orange Country, providing therapy, case management, education, and leadership opportunities, while also hosting events that bring visibility to issues like gender equity, mental health, and cultural belonging. The journey from a small initiative to a recognized organization reflects resilience, the power of community, and a deep commitment to uplifting lives.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Like many young nonprofits, Saahas for Cause faced challenges with limited resources, building trust within immigrant communities, and overcoming the stigma around issues like domestic violence, mental health, and seeking help. Many South Asian families were hesitant to reach out due to cultural barriers or fear of judgment. Funding and staffing in the early years were also hurdles, as the organization had to prove its impact before gaining wider recognition and support. Yet, these struggles became stepping stones—pushing the team to innovate, partner with local agencies, and create safe, culturally sensitive spaces where people felt heard and supported. Today, the same challenges that once seemed like obstacles have shaped Saahas into a stronger, more responsive organization.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Saahas for Cause ?
Saahas for Cause is a nonprofit organization committed to educating, empowering, and enabling South Asian immigrants in Southern California to improve their overall quality of life. We work across several focus areas, including Women & Family Wellness, Older Adult Wellness, Youth Empowerment, and Community Outreach & Health Education. Through these programs, we provide services such as therapy, case management, workshops, leadership training, and wellness activities that address the specific challenges faced by individuals and families in our community. Our mission is not just about offering services, but about creating a support system that uplifts people and helps them thrive.

What truly sets us apart is our cultural sensitivity and understanding of the South Asian immigrant experience. Many of the struggles our community faces, such as domestic violence, mental health stigma, intergenerational conflicts, or senior isolation, are often left unspoken because of cultural barriers. At Saahas, we provide a safe and welcoming space where people feel understood and accepted, without fear of judgment. We are able to bridge the gap between mainstream resources and the South Asian community by tailoring support in a way that honors traditions and cultural identity while still addressing modern-day challenges.

We are most proud of the trust our brand has built within the community. Over the years, Saahas has become a recognized and reliable resource, known for breaking silence around difficult issues and empowering individuals to take charge of their well-being. Our work has been acknowledged through awards and recognition, but our true pride comes from the lives we have touched—the survivor who finds her voice, the senior who no longer feels alone, or the youth who discovers leadership potential. These transformations reflect the heart of who we are as an organization. Above all, we want readers to know that Saahas for Cause is more than just a nonprofit, it is a movement of compassion, resilience, and empowerment. Every program we run, every workshop we host, and every service we provide is rooted in the belief that when communities are supported and empowered, they can flourish. We want people to see Saahas as a trusted partner, a safe space, and a beacon of hope that is dedicated to uplifting South Asian families while also fostering inclusivity and belonging in the wider society.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising that many people may not know about Saahas for Cause is that we began as a very small, grassroots effort with just a handful of volunteers and a vision. Today, people see us as a well-established nonprofit serving thousands across Southern California, but in the early days we operated with almost no resources, just passion, community trust, and a determination to break silence around difficult issues. Another surprising aspect is the breadth of what we do. While many know us for our work with survivors of domestic violence, they are often surprised to learn that we also run senior wellness programs, youth leadership initiatives, health education workshops, and community-wide events that bring people together. This holistic approach allows us to serve multiple generations at once, creating ripple effects of empowerment that extend far beyond a single program.

Something surprising about Saahas for Cause is the way we approach our work and who makes it happen. At Saahas for Cause, we focus strongly on the prevention of factors that affect women’s wellness, such as domestic violence, family-related challenges, and other social issues that impact their quality of life. One of our strengths and surprising facts lies in the diversity of our workforce, a vibrant mix of staff, dedicated volunteers, middle-aged professionals, and enthusiastic young people. While employees typically work standard hours from 9 to 5, our volunteers often dedicate their evenings from 6 to 8, driven by their eagerness to contribute. The work extends across both weekdays and weekends, with youths showing particular enthusiasm for weekend activities, ensuring that our programs remain active, accessible, and impactful for the community we serve.
