Today we’d like to introduce you to Sensei David Becker.
Hi Sensei David, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started training in the martial arts with my Brother under Grand Master Bill M. Ryusaki around the age of five. I continued to learn from him the martial art known as Hawaiian Kenpo karate & judo / Japanese Ju-Jitsu (aka jiu-jitsu). Grand Master Bill Ryusaki became my father’s best friend, he became family. He lived with us went on family trips with us and so forth. When I was in college I became Grand Master Ryusaki’s right hand man & manage Ryu Dojo & Hawaiian Kenpo along side him. In 2016 Grand Master Ryusaki instructed me to found a martial arts style & school to carry his legacy on. This is where Ryu-Dojo transitioned into Fox of peace-Dojo and the style Hawaiian Kenpo adopted into Kitsune Kenpo Karate & ju-jutsu. Saddly in December of 2016 Grand Master Bill a Ryusaki passed away at the age of 80. I remained loyal to my other life long sensei & mentor Grand Master Dennis Mortensen. (He took over Hawaiian Kenpo & Ryu-Dojo ) I’m still Grand Master Mortensen’s right hand man he is also Family.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
After Grand Master Bill Ryusaki’s passing it was very challenging to keep students and older sensei’s together. People had thier lives & careers to follow & pursue. I kept the Dojo open & always welcomed new students. We are a small family Dojo & system focused on self defense & the love of the martial arts. I am also close to Grand Master Mike Kwasigroch of Ketsugo ju-jitsu. He was also a close friend to Sensei Bill Ryusaki. & my system kitsune Kenpo, had incorporated much of his system into my Hawaiian Kenpo roots, both systems are the base of Kitsune Kenpo karate & Ju-Jitsu Anyways, because We are located in a dojo built at home it has not been easy being found. We are mostly run off of word of mouth. & many people look for industrial success via a big facility over the quality of the teachings. We are very focused on small classes & family as well as self defense over sport or trophies. This can be tricky for some to see or understand.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I run all aspects of the Dojo (martial arts school) I am the main sensei & teacher at the school. ( we do have the occasional guest, instructor or assistant instructors. But for the most part it is me who organized the lessons & times for classes.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Come for a free class be respectful & interested in Learning self defense martial arts history & traditions. We are very much a family. I teach from the heart the money part is separate, but needed to keep us open & able to teach & pass along Grand Master Ryusaki’s teachings. Thank you.
