We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jacques Devore. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Jacques, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
Prior to starting my first fitness center in Santa Barbara I was a futures and options trader and in the financial world for over 25 years. I transitioned to Fitness and Health taking a passion and hobby and created a successful business. In addition, I had a book published by Rodale Press on Strength Training for Cyclists. Most people are not aware of all the years I spent in the financial world.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Never Get Pinned: The Busy Executives
Guide to Winning at Managing a Health Portfolio.
My Story:
As a sophomore in high school, I earned a varsity wrestling spot by beating the previous 95
pound wrestler. What I didn’t know was that my next five matches would teach me the most
important lesson for surviving in my everyday life.
After getting pinned five straight times, I sat with my head in my hands, humiliated. That’s when
it hit me: letting myself get pinned was quitting. I made a vow—I don’t care if someone beats me
20 to 0, but I will never let myself get pinned again.
It’s okay to get beaten, just don’t allow yourself to get pinned.
This mindset proved instrumental through my career in risk management. Running a futures and
options fund and as a Managing Director at Deutsche Bank, I needed to learn how to create a
health span approach that would not allow me to quit. Executives manage complex transactions
with sophisticated risk strategies—yet they often manage their health like a single, unhedged
investment that could derail their entire practice.
We like to say that we provide one on one training that just happens to be in a group of up to 6 people. All of our workouts are written specifically for the individual client. This is a big differentiator we are unique in providing this type of individualism in a group.
My background in risk management is evident in how we manage a client’s health and wellness. We are trying to optimize the time the client has available for exercise to deliver the greatest results and using our life lessons to better deliver results to our clients.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My parents always instilled in me the belief that I could accomplish anything I wanted with hard work, thinking for myself and questioning everything. I think asking why something is done a particular way has served me in helping my clients reach their goals.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I have a very stoic mentality to suffering. I know when in the middle of difficult times we oftentimes let the weight of the suffering break us. I try to frame the suffering as a lesson on how to improve myself so that I can minimize the suffering in the future. We always will encounter difficulties, seeing them as opportunities helps tremendously.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
That you are ultimately, and completely responsible for everything that happens in your life.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Without question. I find joy in doing things my best.
