Today we’d like to introduce you to MICROPLASTIQUE.
Hi MICROPLASTIQUE, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, I’m MICROPLASTIQUE! I’m a Queer, electronic music DJ & producer based in Los Angeles. With a unique blend of hyperpop, drum and bass, hip hop, and techno, I’ve performed at venues and events such as Catch One, Bass n Babes, Barbie’s Vibe House, Native Son, The Short Stop, The Stowaway, and Love Song Bar.
Earlier this year, I secured an official residency with a new Y2K themed bar, Zero Lounge on Hollywood Blvd. My sets are upbeat and eclectic; seamlessly blending selects from artists like SOPHIE, Britney Spears, Sara Landry, and Doechii.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t know anyone who’s a creative who has had a smooth road! It’s a struggle to balance a day job, on top of making music, and DJing. I’m grateful to have an amazing support system near and far to keep me grounded through it all.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Ultimately, I make music for the girls, gays, and theys. I’m so proud to be apart of the LGBTQIA+ community, and creating environments where folks feel free to be themselves, play, and meet new people. I’m most proud of the drum and bass opening set I played for the Bass N Babes, 420 show.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite quotes is, “If art is how we decorate space, then music is how we decorate time” (Basquiat). Music has stood to be one of the most important things in my life ever since I was 6 years old sitting at the piano bench with my grandmother. My father, who is also a life-long musician, has helped shape my taste, talent, and appetite for experiencing music every single day. While my musical journey started with piano lessons, I didn’t really start tapping into the creative side of song-writing until I was about 12 years old. My dad gave me about 3 guitar lessons, and I took off on my own. I began writing down lyrics and putting together chord progressions trying to emulate artists like Lana del Rey, Gillian Welch, and Elliott Smith
