Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Tamkin.
Kyle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Kyle Tamkin transferred to California Lutheran University in the fall of 2016, not knowing that a pair of radio classes would spark a lifelong passion. Immersed in the world of broadcasting, Kyle found inspiration in Professor Scott Alexander’s dynamic teaching style—especially when guest speakers dropped in to share real-world insights. One of those guests was Tim Conway Jr., whose visit led to a lasting connection that ultimately opened the door to an internship at KFI AM 640, the country’s leading talk radio station.
Through that experience and his time with iHeartRadio, Kyle built a vast professional network and honed his craft. He continued into graduate studies at Cal Lutheran, where his leadership blossomed—he was promoted to club co-president alongside Giana Gutridge. The two also became co-station managers of iCLU Radio, a role they continue to hold today, shaping student media and mentoring the next wave of communicators.
In 2023, Kyle’s journey came full circle when he was invited to join Cal Lutheran’s communication department as an adjunct professor. He leapt at the chance and now teaches courses in radio, podcasting, and advertising—bringing his industry experience and enthusiasm into the classroom.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Before stepping into my role at iCLU Radio, my background spanned speech and debate, real estate, and multiple entrepreneurial ventures. While those experiences sharpened my public speaking and leadership skills, entering the radio world brought a whole new set of challenges. Managing a team with diverse personalities tested my patience and adaptability, turning me into not just a station manager but also a mentor and motivator. Balancing professionalism with approachability in an academic setting meant fostering an environment where students felt empowered to take creative risks. At the same time, I was driven to run the station with the mindset of a business—bringing structure, efficiency, and a sense of accountability to everything from programming schedules to team development. Despite the ups and downs, what keeps me inspired is watching people come alive in front of the mic. I’ve always rooted for the underdog, and there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing someone step out of their shell and thrive in a space they never thought they could own.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What sets me apart is the unique blend of creativity, technical expertise, and a genuine commitment to mentorship that I bring into every classroom. At California Lutheran University, I’ve found a professional home where I’m not only able to push creative boundaries with my students, but continuously sharpen my own skills to stay at the forefront of media and communication. My background in broadcasting, advertising, and podcasting allows me to offer students a real-world perspective with hands-on experience. Supported by an incredible department chair, Dr. Jean Sandlin, and esteemed faculty mentors like Professor David Grannis, Spencer Fischer and Dr. Russell Stockard, I thrive in an environment where collaboration and innovation fuel personal and professional growth. I take pride in nurturing each student’s potential—championing their journey and celebrating their wins as they prepare to make their mark on the world.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
In life, education, and business, taking risks can feel uncomfortable—but they often pave the way for the most rewarding outcomes. In 2021, my co-station manager at iCLU Radio, Giana Gutridge, and I made the bold decision to revive our annual music festival, CalLuPalooza, after a long pandemic-induced pause. At the time, it was a gamble—we didn’t know how many people would show up, or if we’d even secure enough student performers. But we pushed forward, and that leap of faith paid off. Fast forward to May 2025, CalLuPalooza is thriving—this year’s festival featured live music, a vibrant flea market, delicious food, exclusive merch, and even a red carpet. There’s no looking back now. Like I always tell my students before doing a radio show “prepare to be spontaneous”.
