Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Jackson.
Hi Marissa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m originally from Ohio. I have always loved all things beauty. I decided to move to California to attend beauty school. I felt like it was a place where beauty was held supreme and I would be successful. My first love was makeup and back when I first went to hair school it was to learn updos for weddings. As soon as I got into hair school I knew this was it for me, and my love for makeup kinda faded away. I was so intrigued with all the opportunities that being a hairdresser presented. There was just so much to learn. I was determined to soak it all in. Now I’ve always been a curly girl and growing up, I didn’t have many options when it came to hair care. I wanted to use my life long experience with curly hair to help women embrace their natural hair. I love teaching people how to care for the hair and I love being the copilot in their healthy hair journey. After 10 years in the industry I am still in love with what I do. It is the most rewarding career I could ever ask for. I am very grateful.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I definitely would say it has been a journey. I started out at a salon, and I quickly learned I was meant to be an entrepreneur. I had so much vision and I knew I wasn’t going to be to make my dreams a happen in that particular environment. Starting a business definitely tested my mental toughness and pushed me in a lot of areas that I never had to tap into before. I never went to college and I’m the first in my family to be fully self employed. There was a lot of growing pains and adjustments. But I wouldn’t change a thing! I used to dream of the life I’m living.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in ALL types of textured hair. From waves to coils. 2a – 4c
Cutting and coloring curly hair are my specialties. I love them both cutting is like sculpting and coloring hair is like painting.
I recently have expanded and also specialize in silk presses.
I would say I am known for helping women love their hair. My goal is to give the gift of confidence. I want every one to understand their and how to build a routine. Healthy hair is a partnership.
I think what sets me apart is I truly want you to feel confident and comfortable. I feel I provide a safe space for self expression and appreciation. I think with the curly movement there was a lot of good that came from it, but I also believe the community got a little restrictive. It became more about rules than self expression. I want my clients to love their hair whether they want to wear it curly or straight. I am in full support of whatever style makes you feel most confident. I am here for you!
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I assisted many stylist especially in the beginning of my career. I assisted for 4 years before actually becoming a stylist. I love learning, and assisting was so pivotal in my development. The one thing I learned is there is no right or wrong way to do one thing. Learning from a multitude of people helped me develop an arsenal of skills to pull from. I am forever grateful to all of my mentors. I’m also forever indebted to my clients. Hair is a sacred thing and it takes a lot to trust someone enough to touch your crown. It’s beautiful to earn their trust and build bonds off of that. It’s much deeper than hair.
