Hidden Gems: Meet Steven Vargo of Monterey Bay FC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Vargo.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my journey working in sports back at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah – the state I grew up in. I had known all of my life that I wanted to spend my life being involved in sports in one way or another. Of course at a child it started as a dream to be a professional athlete (like most children), but as I got older the dream became about being a sports broadcaster on TV, or maybe even a PA announcer in stadium inspired by legendary Utah Jazz PA guy Dan Roberts. I still wasn’t exactly sure when I started college, but I walked into the athletics office as a freshman anyways and asked for any way that I could be involved. What I ended up doing is what I’m still doing today, I worked in Communications. Still heavily involved in the sports organization, just behind the scenes. After that internship, I officially had my sights set on a career goal. While earning the rest of my degree, I worked at the Team Store for Real Salt Lake (MLS club). Upon graduation, I applied to work in communications for Real Salt Lake, and was brought on as an intern. The following season, I was asked back to lead the other interns and then officially joined the Communications team from there. After six years with Real Salt Lake, I accepted a managerial role in communications with a brand new professional soccer club, Monterey Bay FC. My wife Natalie and I journeyed to Monterey, California at the beginning of 2022 and we’ve been here ever since.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely wasn’t easy to get to where I am today, but I can’t pretend that I had the type of difficult road that I’m sure others have had. I have always had amazing support from my entire family – support that has allowed me to pursue my dream of working in professional sports in a multitude of ways and I am extremely grateful for that.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Monterey Bay FC?
Monterey Bay Football Club is a professional soccer team based in the Monterey peninsula that competes in the USL Championship in the second tier of the U.S. Soccer Pyramid.

In my role, I lead all of the communications and media relations for the club. All of the writing that comes out of the club whether its a press release, a statement, a story, a match preview or recap, you name it – I wrote it. In addition, I’ve taken on the role of club historian, tracking every stat and record and you can imagine both match to match and year to year. Ensuring media coverage for the club on both television and in the local newspapers is another important aspect of my role, something that requires a lot of relationship building and collaboration. Currently underway in just our fourth-ever season, I’m extremely proud of what we’ve built here from day one. Of course, we have a long way to go, but we’re building a real sense of community around professional soccer.

What I hope sets me apart is my genuine care for life and the positivity, kindness, and respect that I do my best to give everyone I meet.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m a fairly private person without really meaning to be, so I feel like a lot of what people find out about me on a daily basis ultimately surprises them a little bit.
