Community Highlights: Meet Nicole Garrett of Under Pressure Hyperbarics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Garrett

Hi Nicole, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As a young child I was always fascinated by the ocean. I moved out to San Diego with hopes of training dolphins, however I quickly realized that you can’t sustain yourself in San Diego on minimum wage and didn’t want to succumb to a life of working multiple jobs to make ends meet. I literally opened up the newspaper one day (yes it was that long ago) and saw an add for commercial dive school. I immediately enrolled and unbeknownst to me embarked on what would be a life changing journey. I graduated dive school with a a CAD license (commercial air diver) and my EMT and DMT (dive medical technician). I was quickly recruited to UCSD to work in their hyperbaric department and gained valuable experience in not only dive emergencies but multiple traumas from crush injuries togas embolisms, to flesh eating bacteria from spider bites. Over they years I participated in several research projects including traumatic brain injuries with our military and department of defense. I opened up multiple hospital based hyperbaric facilities across the country. While honored to bring more of this amazing therapy to centers across the nation, I also grew frustrated that all these new facilities were still restricted with what they were able to treat based on hospital restrictions. This is what urged me to open my own facility, Under Pressure Hyperbarics, where we can offer hospital grade hyperbaric oxygen therapy to a wider variety of indications.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing worth doing is ever smooth. I was the only female in dive school, so I had to work extra hard to be on point and prove I was an equal. Even at the university medical center I was faced with adversity, many of the other techs didn’t believe women should be working in the field, especially not as their superior. Ultimately my reputation has proven consistent over the nearly 20 years I’ve now been in the field. I’m called on to consult all over the world and have continued to assist multiple physicians and hospitals with in the field of hyperbarics.

We’ve been impressed with Under Pressure Hyperbarics, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Under Pressure Hyperbaric provides hospital grade hyperbaric oxygen therapy in a safe comfortable environment. We have expanded to host a full array of ant-aging and wellness therapies including peptides, red-light therapy, IV therapy and wellness coaching. All of our staff are highly trained and uphold our rigorous safety standards.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Sunshine, time outdoors, time with my pets, good people and good conversation. Living in the fast pace of Los Angeles and owning your own business which means no real days off, it’s the walks on the beach, or reading a book on the couch with my dog that brings balance to life.
