Conversations with Gustavo Lopez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gustavo Lopez

Hi Gustavo, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a Mexican born artist enjoying and thriving in the culture of LA. I picked up the guitar at age 14, inspired by my favorite music teacher Mr. Sauza whom I met in 7th grade. I evolved through genres as my music taste expanded with help from my father, and eventually found my calling as a singer and songwriter. I took on many famous stages in the Los Angeles area from The Whisky A Go Go to the Roxy and the Wiltern, all with projects I created. I am the oldest sibling out of three and growing up in a broken family always kept me in a leadership position amongst myself and my peers. I grew up very independently up until the age of 11, I had no cousins, no siblings or nobody to look up to but parents. Both my mom and dad are immigrants and were forced to be very hardworking to keep food on the table and a roof over our head. I watched them struggle as they provided what was necessary and even brought home more to keep me happy. As I witnessed this, I learned that it is important to have a tenacious mindset, to enjoy working and helping others. My goal is to give back to my parents and show my gratitude for them as I know it wasn’t easy making it and raising me in a foreign country. Full time, I am a videographer and video editor for a successful Photo and Video company by the name of Creative Tower, where we specialize in shooting weddings, music videos and other events. To this day I write different types of songs from Hip Hop, Reggae, Cumbias, and love performing in front of large crowds and interacting with anyone who enjoys the music I play.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a leader can be fun but very frustrating at times. It is important to attend to the needs and to listen to anyone you work with. Creating a team filled with different types of people and their egos can become a challenge but as the days go on, it helps you grow as a person. As the first son and the oldest of my siblings, I also had to learn to set aside my own interest and priorities and to never abandon my family. Money was never something that was easily accessible to me growing up in a lower class family, so I had to learn to chase it on my own. In high school I was the first kid who started selling goodies at school and making my own money while I was also learning. After high school, I quickly went to college but as the pandemic came around, I had to drop out and start working in construction to help myself and my family. As the pandemic slowly came to an end and our business picked back up I left construction and started investing into my father’s company, Creative Tower.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a musician who is more than eager to perform and engage with large crowds. I have had different types of projects from a Rock band to Cumbia projects to get people dancing and singing. I can also collaborate with a range of artist from rappers and singers and have worked to get the best out of evey individual. As a music producer, it is important to have a good ear and who what sounds fits best for each individual project. Put me in a party and either as musician, an MC or a DJ, I will make it my job to make sure the vibe is set for the event.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
There is no other city I would have liked to grow up in other than Los Angeles, California. This is the city where we all grew up knowing there is always a platform here for us creatives to shine. It is truly inspiring to live in a city often projected as the capital of talent, art and expression. From being the set to many famous and exciting Hollywood blockbusters, to being the star many songs written to capture the feeling of living in such a city. Los Angeles is the epicenter to all from snow, forest, mountains and beach, with everything being an hour from each other. The only downside to living in such a city is the abundance of traffic.
