Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Andrade
Hi Frank, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always enjoyed art in all its forms and as a son of Mexican immigrants I express my love and fascination for American culture through my art.
growing up as a kid the language, the customs, the entertainment all left me amazed because it was different to the values and entertainment that I was getting at home.
I particularly loved the metal, punk and hip hop scene. it inspired my fascination with being true to yourself and being authentic.
that rebellious spirit that poured out through the music inspired my artistic style
Fashion has also been a area of interest to me and that brought me to putting my art to my clothing. treating each piece as my canvas
things really ramped up for me and my brand around the time of the pandemic and the lockdown
I was painting on jackets mostly and during the lock downs I made the decision to learn how to digitally paint and learn how to screenprint my own merch
Each piece that people buy from me has been totally created by me.
It brings me great joy being able to bring my artistic ideas to life, even more when I know I really did this on my own.
so when you buy a piece from me, know that I run and do everything for my brand HORRIFIC
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
it has not been a smooth road
as a son if Mexican immigrants we dealt with poverty and learning to speak the native the language. I didn’t learn how to speak english until 2nd grade.
I’ve always dealt with anxiety without really realizing what it was until much later in my life which left me with being very shy and constantly nervous as a kid. luckily ive managed how to handle my anxiety
i’ve survived almost dying from my appendix rupturing that left me unable to complete college and I was forced to dropout which caused me to be severely depressed.
my clothing brand is not where I want it to be but i continue to go down this path of creativity for the love of it and I only hoping i can eventually make this into a profitable business
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a full time artist as a professional high end woodfinisher.
i work with my father who started his business after a couple years of struggling in this country after migrating from Mexico.
I would like to continue my family business as well as having a successful clothing brand
what sets me apart from others is I have multiple years of working with paint and other materials and it has been vast knowledge on artistic materials and painting techniques that are being forgotten.
my job has taught to be self reliant, if I am not able to do something, I will take the time to learn how to do it.
that includes being able to fail multiple times and getting back up learning from my mistakes
my proudest achievement is being able to make a livable wage with my artistic skills
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I would like to able to expand my business out of my garage into a shop and hire a couple people on the production side of things for my clothing brand.
I don’t want to follow any trends I Just want to express my unique human experience through my clothing brand and art
