Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnny/Leyz Haro
Johnny/Leyz, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I (Johnny) started writing music and playing by myself when I was 16. About the same time, I went through some dark moments when I found out that I wasn’t my dad’s biological son and as a teenager, going though my teenage angst, I felt that my life was a lie. I decided to run away from home, and lived in the streets, friend’s homes, and motels for about three years. In those times, I would meet random people to play with and deeply learned music with them. Eventually, I ended up playing in two bands as the rhythm guitarist and sometimes the vocalist in some songs.
In 2007, the grunge scene was not a big thing in my city (Montebello) so a lot of people did not like the way I played. Then I met a couple of friends that understood and liked that sound. I then formed my own band called Superfuzz later called Bad Vibes. That band and those friends helped me develop my own sound. It was not easy and we all went through a lot.
Playing in a band with different musicians made me realize that people come and go. But I never gave up and fast forward to now, Light Dazed was formed. My current drummer/bass player (who is also my wife) Leyz’ main skills are vocals and guitar, and had basic drumming skills during the early stages of Light Dazed so I played with other band members. Eventually, I decided to teach and develop her skills and later on performed with me as a two-piece band.
I recently released our first EP Kiss Me, Kill Me and currently working on the next EP.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh it wasn’t easy at all. And it still isn’t! But that’s life right?
Playing alternative grunge, this genre was an underdog in our area!
People come and go, you gotta start all over again and again.
Money.
Connections.
Help. (It’s only two people!)
Life.
You get it!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I write music for the sad, the angry, the lost, the unjust, the broken. I felt the pain so I want my listeners to know that they are not alone.
We also want to add that Leyz and I have cats.. We love cats and other animals so we have compassion for them. Stray cats are lost and they do not deserve to be homeless so we help feed and fix cats.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
We don’t love risks but sometimes we just have to take it especially if we know there can be a positive result that comes out of it. We are the little guys in our scene but we go out of our way to host shows to promote ourselves and some of our favorite local bands where we usually end up in a financial loss. But at the end of the day, we love doing it and we love the community who enjoys the events.
