Meet Chuy Michel of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chuy Michel

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Trial N Error is a DJ duo consisting of Chuy Michel and Tom Reichert. We both have a background in music, Chuy growing up in the dance music scene in the 1990s, while Tom almost went to music school instead of college, and nutured a love of music for many years after. In around 2016, Tom got Chuy a gift certificate for DJ school as a birthday present, and they both ended up attending. Realizing immediately they needed equipment, they went out and got their first DJ setup, got some music, and started practicing together. Tom’s technical nerdiness balanced Chuy’s musical depth as they developed their skills. When someone told Tom that his DJ name should be “Trial” because he was a lawyer as a day job, the duo name Trial N Error was born. Since then, we’ve been playing gigs all over Los Angeles and California, with occasional forays to Mexico and Belgium to keep the music playing and the people dancing.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The pandemic was the biggest struggle – DJs live to play in front of people, to make people dance, and the pandemic isolated everyone. One sociologist called dancing “Collective Joy” and during the pandemic, we lost the collective joy. And when things began to reopen, most venues were booking just a small number of the most well-known DJs, which made the hustle more challenging. Luckily, perseverance, and an endless love of music, pays off!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Our genre is house music and the related sounds – disco, funk, tech house, deep house. In the last 2 years, we began a monthly party called “Uncut,” which plays exclusively Latin house music. We are the only Latin house party in Los Angeles. As a DJ duo, we have our own sounds, but they work together seamlessly; our strength is our diversity.

We are constantly looking for new music on podcasts, SoundCloud, Bandcamp and many other places. If we told you more, we’d be giving away trade secrets!
