Life & Work with Dana Asher Levine of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Asher Levine

Hi Dana, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At 38 I got divorced and I had to start over. I had 3 children, and I had to go back to work but I wasn’t sure what I was good at. I had gone to college and worked in the past but this was a fresh start. So, one day I was in a mommy and me class and this woman asked me, “Omg you always look so great, can I pay you to shop for me?” and I thought to myself, “Is this a job?”. I then immediately called my sister, Mindy Weiss, and I said, “This woman wants to pay me to shop for her” and to which my sister replied, “Omg yes, so weird you called I have this woman who is throwing a big party and has no time to shop. THIS is going to be your job!”. So, from that moment on I would shop at my older sister Jaye’s retail store she ran while Mindy threw the parties and I handled shopping and clothes.

In the end, I started working with writers, directors, producers, and women who were too busy to shop that had really big jobs and families. I really based my business on styling executives for red carpets, interviews, and day to day looks in the office. The reason why I am called “The Clothing Therapist” is because the women I was dressing started realizing it was similar to a therapy session. It wasn’t like I was delving into their personal problems but getting dressed can be very emotional. For women, it includes how they’re feeling that day, how they are feeling when they put on their clothes, and other inner battles that they are dealing with. So, “The Clothing Therapist” was a perfect name for me and my clients.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any entrepreneur goes through ups and downs especially when you are working alone. I had a family and kids to provide for so that always drove me to make sure I made ends meet. In the early years, I was always worried where the work was going to come from so I would sit outside of Neiman Marcus on the bench and act like I was meeting a client there. But in actuality I was there hoping to potentially meet new clients to style.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Celebrity Stylist, Mom, and Wardrobe Therapist. I am known for dressing “Power Women” and my goal is to make all women feel confident about how they look, what they do, and where they’re going. I am most proud of creating this niche that I have now done for over 25 years that has not only helped me raise my children but also boosted influential women to feel and look their best.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I had a wonderful childhood and too many favorite memories to be able to just narrow it down to one. I was born and raised in Los Angeles with my two sisters, Mindy and Jaye, who were always by my side. My mom, who was absolutely fabulous, would always dress all three of us up in matching outfits. My mother was a very stylish woman who loved to throw big extravagant parties. So, I can see now how this has shaped my sisters and I to love and work in the careers that we do today.
