Today we’d like to introduce you to Ky Kenyon
Hi Ky, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Firstly, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to reach out, and show interest in what I do, so thank you for that!
I first discovered what editing was in high school. I quickly became obsessed with watching as many videos as I could find online about editing, and visual effects. I especially liked After Effects. Being able to change images with masks and effects was something that completely blew me away.
I went to University of Central Florida for film, and there I started shooting and editing music videos for different hip-hop artists in Florida. We quickly had success with some of our videos reaching well over a million views. The music videos were a perfect jumping off point to explore different editing techniques, and shooting styles. However, I kept my eyes on the ultimate goal, making feature films.
I moved to LA in 2016, and quickly started using the editing skills that I had developed with music videos on TV shows, where I have worked as an editor and assistant editor ever since.
Finally, in the summer of 2022, I got the opportunity that I had been waiting for. To make my first feature film, Wilting Rose, which coincidently comes out next month (March 2025)!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road by any means. Our industry is very unpredictable, and you have to learn to adapt very quickly. Saving your money is important, especially while you are working a lot. I will say that I’ve been lucky to have amazing friends that I’ve met along the way that have helped guide me, and give me advice when I don’t know something or how to handle something.
I take great pride in the personal and work relationships that I’ve made over the years. Many of whom I hope will be lifelong friends and colleagues.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As I think I’ve mentioned. I mostly in editing and assistant editing. I have to mention a couple people who have been vital in my career. Dan Kuba was one of the first post supervisors I worked with, and he really exposed me to what post really is in a larger television environment. Simon Fuchs is another big time post supervisor/post producer who has really taught me a lot about some of the newer emerging post workflows, and I’m always in awe of his experience.
Then, over the last year and a half, I’ve been blessed to work with Aaron Champion, Brian McCauley, Brandon DeLany and Erica Muñoz at Champion Turf and Alexandria Films. They’ve really taken me in, and shown me the ropes at what it means to push the boundaries of the creative process. I’m incredibly grateful for them, and their experience and drive at seeing projects through and adding their stamp.
In this industry I think you have to be most proud of the people you surround yourself with. Doing big shows is cool, and finishing a feature film is great, but at the end of the day getting to work on these kinds of things with people you look up to and enjoy the company of is the best thing in the world.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is play catch football with my dad on a beach in the summer.
