Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlowe Underwood
Hi Marlowe , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started rapping when I was only 4. My grandmother sung in the church choir and grandfather played bass guitar so music was always around me as a kid. I use to watch them practice and rehearse at home and couldn’t help but to develop a love for music at that age. I would rap songs from NWA and Too Short since I didn’t know how to write music but around 10 years old I successfully recorded and wrote my on songs in the studio. By 14 in high-school I was selling tickets and doing my own shows with friends I grew up with which help me develop early networking skills. After high-school I was in a rap group called Top ShotaGang which consisted of me and about 4 other members who were and still all like brothers to me. We packed out venues locally and had thousands of views on youtube but things didn’t play out how we wanted within the group which stunted our success. I was 19 caught up in the streets and had friends and family who were murdered or thrown away in jail which was tough to deal with. Kansas City was not big on support for independent artists unfortunately, so I took my talent to Las Vegas after I turned 21. Vegas has a lot more life than Kansas City even though I love my city. It seems people love to support me as a friend, coworker, and as an artist. People show up for you more. So far I have performed on tour with Kevo Muney (Leave Someday Tour), Dropped a project (KC State Of Mind) that went #6 on iTunes hiphop charts, and have done countless shows and visuals increasing my audience and popularity. It seems like I am ready to be heard on a bigger stage. I want to shine the light I have on my city as well as other cities that have been a 2nd home to me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My struggles started very young. Both of my parents dropped out of school and were involved in gangs and selling drugs. This caused us to go without a lot of things. I was taught to sell drugs in elementary school and had a gun at the age of 8. By the time I was in middle school I was helping my parents out regularly. We went without frequently until I moved out at the age of 15. I stayed with my boy Steelo who also did music. Shortly after, I moved in with my girlfriend at the time who later became the mother of my children. I held a job and made the honor roll in school while performing my music every chance I got. It became a part of my life. I was never a bad kid, I was just dealt with a bad hand that I was forced to play at the time.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a songwriter and recording artist. I love to write a song whether its for myself or someone else. I wanna see how it comes to life. I knew my songwriting abilities were exceptional once I started writing full songs in 10-15 minutes. I recorded a project in under 3 hours before.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
my favorite memory will have to be performing at the talent shows in school. It helped me battle with anxiety as well as figure out my identity. My earlier years in school I didn’t have many friends or didn’t socialize much. I had a lot going on in my personal life and you could definitely tell I was different from other kids growing up. Once I started doing music it’s like everyone accepted me more and they seen me as more of a gifted individual.
