Life & Work with Perdell Richardson of Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Perdell Richardson

Hi Perdell, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2008. Shortly after, I directed my first feature film, The Scam, which achieved significant success and opened the door for me to join the Directors Guild of America (DGA). My most recent project is titled Know Mercy which comes out February 18, 2025.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest struggles is finding a balance between working to cover your bills and pursuing your dreams. It’s a constant challenge to ensure your financial responsibilities are met while staying committed to your creative goals. Another significant challenge, especially when you first move to Los Angeles, is finding your “village”—a group of like-minded people who share your vision and values. Building that community is essential for collaboration and growth.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a film director and cinematographer, specializing in creating visually compelling stories. I’ve become known for my distinctive visual style, which reflects a deep commitment to the artistic look of my projects. This is rooted in a strong technical understanding of how lighting techniques, composition, camera movement, and lens choices impact storytelling.

What truly sets me apart is my versatility and mastery across multiple disciplines. In addition to directing and cinematography, I’m also a skilled editor and colorist, bringing a professional level of expertise to all four roles. This comprehensive approach allows me to maintain creative control over every aspect of my projects, ensuring a cohesive vision.

I’m especially proud of my latest work, Know Mercy, which exemplifies my dedication to both artistry and craftsmanship.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in good luck or bad luck. I truly believe that I am blessed and that my faith has played a significant role in shaping my filmmaking career. My journey has been guided by purpose and trust in a higher plan, which has been a constant source of strength and direction.
