Conversations with Kateryna Zelenska

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kateryna Zelenska

Hi Kateryna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Kateryna Zelenska, and I am Ukrainian. My journey into the beauty world began when I was 18 years old. I enrolled in a hairdressing course in my hometown Donetsk This course to be honest was not very good. However, it gave me the clarity I needed to realize that I wanted to become a hairstylist.

After that initial experience, I pursued numerous masterclasses, seminars, and courses to enhance my skills. My first job was as an assistant in a salon, where I cleaned the floors, washed bowls and brushes, and shampooed clients’ hair. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to work as a hairstylist, which led me to leave that position in search of a place where I could gain the necessary experience.

I worked tirelessly until war broke out in my city, prompting my family and me to relocate to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. There, I found an incredible job in a modern beauty salon, and my career began to flourish. I always aspired to be more than just a hairdresser, so after 2.5 years in the salon, I decided to venture out on my own. For a year, I rented a chair in a salon and partnered with another hairstylist. Together, we opened a small salon in the city center.

As business grew, I attracted more clients and yearned for greater independence. After 1.5 years, we parted ways, and I created the salon of my dreams.
I was dedicated to developing and expanding my business, but then the war reached our all cities in Ukraine and forcing us to leave the country.

We chose California, and it turned out to be the right decision. Here, my life began anew. The extensive experience I had gained allowed me to start my own company again, this time in Beverly Hills.

Today, I proudly own “Zelenska Beauty,” my hair studio in the heart of Beverly Hills. I understand how challenging it is to start over and how important it is to remain patient and resilient. No matter how lost you may feel, keep working hard to achieve your goals once more.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Sure, it’s always been up and down. I had a lot of obstacles on my way, from facing fierce competition to overcoming self-doubt. Each challenge taught me valuable lessons that shaped my journey. I tried to be better in my field by continuously honing my skills, seeking out mentorship, and staying updated with industry trends. I made a conscious effort to use the best products, ensuring that my work reflected quality and professionalism. Working in the best salons and areas was also a significant part of my strategy; it not only enhanced my exposure but also allowed me to learn from talented colleagues. However, there were times when I faced setbacks.

Sometimes I wanted to give up and not be a hairstylist, feeling overwhelmed by the pressures and challenges that came my way. The long hours, demanding clients, and the constant need to stay ahead in a competitive industry weighed heavily on me. Yet, deep down, there was a voice inside me that kept urging me on, reminding me of my passion and the joy I felt when I transformed someone’s look. It said, “You can do it; go for it.” This internal motivation became my guiding light during tough times. I would reflect on the moments when I made clients smile or the satisfaction I felt after mastering a new technique. Those memories fueled my determination to push through the doubts and continue pursuing my dream. I learned that perseverance is key, and every struggle is just a stepping stone toward becoming the stylist I aspire to be.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

Fifty percent depends on the stylist; I use my unique technique for applying the lightening product to the hair, which allows me to achieve a good lightening base while preserving hair quality. The other fifty percent depends on the client. Proper home care, professional products, and regular salon visits for restorative treatments are all very important for the health of your hair.
