Today we’d like to introduce you to Mimi Studio

Hi Mimi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Well, I started crocheting at the young age of 10. It was like any normal day at school when my best friend at the time came in with yarn and a hook and she showed me how to make a “chain”. I was hooked right off the bat with this cause it helped keep my attention!
It was something at the time I didn’t think too much about until I learned my mother also knew how to crochet and had learned from her mother. I feel like it definitely became something that I do to also feel closer to my mother and grandmother.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In my later years I was diagnosed not only with just ADHD, but also BPD, ODD, MHD and ASD. I also have anxiety & depression. At one point the depression overtook me and I fell into a dark place.
I took a brief break from crocheting but ultimately came back to it after my now fiancé took interest in having some stuff made after learning about my talent.
Because of my fiancé and his support he gave me the courage to start my crochet business and start posting it on social media.
I crochet not only as a way to express my creativity but also as an outlet to put my emotions in a good place! My goal is to advocate for people with disabilities like me and show our dreams can do something BIG in this world.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a PROUD Small Crochet Business! I have crocheted things from clothing, outdoor decor, accessories, to plushies.
My speciality and the items I make the most are plushies which are correctly referred to as “Amigurumi”. I love to make Characters; which are usually from Anime or movies/tv shows. The most requested custom order I get for crochet is for me to make JUMBO characters which I enjoy making! I’ve previously made jumbo Minion, Hello kitty, Kuromi, Bluey, Cinnamoroll, and My melody.
In retrospect I would say I enjoy all types of crochet though and hope to continue to grow my knowledge and techniques.
I know I’m nowhere near as good as I could be as I still fawn over things on my feed that other creators make but that doesn’t mean I’m not confident in my work.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
As much as I love crocheting and my small business it is a 24/7 job that doesn’t always pay all the bills (but that is the dream) so I also have 2 other jobs. At the moment I work 3 jobs in total~ 1 being my full time which is this business and the other 2 being both part-time jobs. With having a busy schedule I don’t get a lot of free time but when I do you’ll catch me relaxing most likely watching Anime (Crunchyroll, Hulu, Netflix, etc) or listening to music (YouTube Music, and Spotify)
