Today we’d like to introduce you to Shirley Mak.
Hi Shirley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started off with my blog in middle school way back in 2011! It was a fun outlet for me to share my outfits and style “tips” that my 8th grade self thought was incredible. But I’ve always had a love for video, so I finally started my YouTube channel a year after that. Since then, it’s been really fun to see how I’ve evolved throughout the years and see that change through my content. My focus nowadays is primarily on living a more sustainable and conscious life, navigating career/life, and sharing that with my audience!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, it’s been really great all of these years. Without my blog or YouTube channel, I wouldn’t have met many of my friends today. I truly appreciate how easy it was to find community on YouTube (back then), even though that has relatively died down now and has shifted to Instagram.
One thing I’ve found difficult has been growth. Especially having done this for so long, it can get really discouraging to not see the numbers reflect that. But I really treasure filming & photography as passions of mine so it’s something I’ve learned not to take to heart!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Outside of content creation, I work full-time as a cultural strategist at a marketing consultancy/agency. It’s truly a dream job that I didn’t even know existed and I love what I do so much!! We work with the coolest brands just digging into trends, learning about cultures, speaking to super cool experts, brainstorm about strategies, and get to implement big changes at businesses.
I try to bring my sustainability and intersectionality point of view into these projects since we work with pretty large brands, so I optimistically try and push for these strategies.
