Rising Stars: Meet Robert Kerbeck

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Kerbeck.

Hi Robert, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In 2018, my family fought the Woolsey Fire to save our home when most of our neighborhood burned to the ground.

The LA Times asked me to write an essay about the experience that turned into my book, Malibu Burning, which won a 2021 SoCal Journalism Award, the 2020 IPPY Award, and 2020 Best of LA Award.

My brand new book, RUSE: Lying the American Dream from Hollywood to Wall Street, is about my career as a corporate spy.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Ha! Wellbeing a spy is never easy but it’s never boring either.

During my career, I was tasked with extracting private information from major companies including employee salaries, internal rankings, corporate strategies, future plans, and acquisitions, basically the ‘playbook’ on anything a major rival would want to know about a competitor.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My book, Malibu Burning, which was about the worst wildfire in LA County history, is now being made into a documentary.

The goal is to try to prevent or mitigate the damage from future wildfires by helping residents and communities become better prepared and more resilient.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
My new book, RUSE, was recently featured in Shondaland (Creator of Inventing Anna) and a TV series is now in development.
