Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitchel Wilson. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Subterranean Hair’s mission statement is “To Promote Hair Professional Prominence Through Expertly Crafted Universal Identity.” Everything we do operates under the umbrella of that dogma. With both Mitchel and Rosemary coming from an extensive history within big corporate beauty, they witnessed the epicenter of beauty marketing manipulations resulting in scued impressions of self-image. They were appalled by the lack of honesty, integrity and responsibility that motivated them to make a change. Together they analyzed typical grooming regimes and recognized many areas of opportunity for an honest, transparent approach to self-care with regard to hair. The experiential universal hair space provides technique-focused rooms comprised of a fashion/ long hair area, chemical application room and barbershop, providing amenities matched to the client’s service needs. Subterranean Hair is devoted to empowering its artists through education and holds internal classes on three Monday’s a month, along with hosting industry events that welcome all hair professionals. Prior to the client and artist agreeing on the client’s service needs, an in-depth consultation is conducted taking into consideration the unique qualities of the individual. The support products that Subterraneans match to the client’s needs must perform in spades, harmonize with human physiology and be responsible to the planet.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There has been many learning lessons and growing pains along the road. The biggest probably being the pandemic that shut us down within six months after opening. But honestly, we used the time constructively and wrote our fundamental cut craft book; which might not have happened so quickly if we weren’t gifted time. Owning a small business has its challenges, but far greater are the rewards.

Subterranean Hair strives to be a uniquely modern experience in client care and crafted hair design. We have developed a consultation process that uses Jungian archetype principles to match cut and color to individual personality strength, face shape, skin/ eye tone, lifestyle and fashion sensibilities. All Subterranean services are agreed upon during the required preliminary consultation, all services are included in our hourly rate, which is set by the artist’s education level.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Our owner/ Creative director is also the singer/ guitar player in the emerging post-punk band – Mirrored Vision.
