Rising Stars: Meet Lily Magaziner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lily Magaziner.

Hi Lily, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My professional background is in jewelry design and manufacturing. Prior to starting May Martin, I worked for a jewelry manufacturing company making private label jewelry for large companies. I started as Executive Assistant to the Creative Director and worked my way up over six years learning all facets of the jewelry industry. I learned how to turn my artwork into jewelry and started selling my designs to a boutique at The LAB. When the previous owner was leaving and offered me her space, I took over and began selling my line along with other artists and designers. I continued to sell to my previous wholesale clients in addition to managing our new store. My studio grew and we now have two retail locations in Costa Mesa, The LAB and in Victoria Square, and one location coming soon to Laguna Beach!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are always day-to-day challenges, and the struggle is to stay confident and keep pushing forward. When I started the company, we were so small and scrappy having to do all jobs, even the ones I was not very skilled at myself. Starting small helped to refine the brand and by continuing to push forward over the past eight years, we’ve been able to grow our team and expand the business.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Our jewelry is designed and handmade in-house. We are known for our quality, affordability and our lifetime repair policy. We currently offer “permanent” jewelry which is soldered on without a clasp.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was always interested in accessories and fascinated with the arts; everything from ballet, photography, painting and ceramics. I grew up in Miami, Florida which exposed me to a melting pot of different cultures and art.
