Rising Stars: Meet Krista Mason

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista Mason.

Hi Krista, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
While born and raised in Southern California, it wasn’t until attending junior year of high school in Snohomish, WA when I was trying to find myself that my dream career became a realization. I remember sitting in my first photography class and it happened – everything made sense, everything was clear…THIS was how I was going to connect with those around me on a level that I never could before.

I knew without a doubt that I wanted to photograph people.

I wanted to capture what they were feeling, help them see themselves in a different light, make them feel beautiful and look amazing. The moment they smiled or shared a laugh or look of love – that’s what it was all about. Capturing their genuine beauty is what fired me up and it still does.

The pandemic forced many of us to step out of our comfort zones and find news ways to live. I personally have leaped out of my comfort zone by growing and expanding my mind to a whole new focus in photography. Stepping away from Weddings and Events, and leaping into Fine Art Branding Photography and Newborns.

Without taking that break and needing to figure out a way to survive financially during the pandemic, I don’t think I would have been as open to experience new things. I am so thankful that this help guide me to my new passion in Fine Art Branding and Newborn Photography!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s scary to start a new venture and sometimes the fear gets in our way – especially as sole entrepreneurs. Putting yourself out there, asking for the sale, being venerable as an artist not to mention the systems and running a business. Man, it sure isn’t for the faint of heart.

I don’t want to purely focus on the wins and success, but rather acknowledging some of the failures along the way. Because success comes from failure. We all make mistakes and running a business has a ton of failure and bumps. I remember hearing from the photographers that I admire, ‘build it and it will come’ or ‘just keep going and believing’. I wish I could say it’s that easy!

As long as we learn from the hard parts, we can continue and improve. I used to freak out when something went wrong or I didn’t get it right the first time. Now I can troubleshoot or try again and know that one way or another I can problem solve it or make it better the next time. The more you go for it and the more experience you get, the easier and more calm things will run. It does come with experience, so keep at it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a fine art branding, newborn & family photographer for savvy & fun women. Leveling up your visual brand to grow your business. Helping women feel confident, comfortable & beautiful in front of camera – business to families!

I don’t just want to make pretty pictures. I wanted to create an experience where you feel comfortable, confident and beautiful, where you literally don’t have to worry about a thing.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the culture and variety. One day you can have an authentic Mexican dish on Olvera Street, the next a vegan salad in Los Feliz and the next a 5-star Michelin restaurant downtown! And one weekend you can go to the beach, the next the snowy mountains with hundreds of thousands amazing restaurants, wineries, breweries and fun experiences in-between. The weather ain’t so bad either! The versatility to be who you want to be is available and surrounded all around us. I think everyone from LA will agree the worst thing about living here is the traffic (especially the 405) and the cost of living!

Pricing:

  • Branding sessions begin at $1000
  • Newborn and Families prices vary and begin at $800
