Today we’d like to introduce you to Kasey Potts.
Hi Kasey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I was ten years old, I was given a dream job working for Radio Disney. I hosted a national talk show called Kasey’s Korner interviewing celebrities like Britney Spears, Destiny’s Child, and 98 Degrees. It was this experience that paved the way for me to pursue Journalism School even though I was told by my news professor that my look was “better suited” for behind the camera.
Through out this journey, I was weighed down by never-ending criticism and my own insecurities. I wanted to be the girl on the red carpet for Entertainment Tonight or everyone’s favorite afternoon talk show host, but I didn’t see anyone who looked like me doing it, so I set out to be the role model I wish I had. In 2021, I decided to dig up that dream of hosting my own talk show and make it happen for myself. Thanks to social media and audio streaming, I no longer had the excuses that had held me back for so long.
Kasey’s Korner has been re-born as a weekly podcast where I host guests spanning from wellness experts all the way to former pop stars to serve as the ultimate resource for millennial moms so they can overcome the overwhelm of everyday life with confidence, humor and style.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would not say that the road I’ve taken has been easy. Filled with detours, rejections, and squashed dreams, I somehow managed to persevere and pave my own path. Starting off in college when my professor told me that my look was “better suited for behind the scenes, not the red carpet” to post-grad in 2011 when I moved across the country for a company that folded a month later. I was at this time I took on part-time office work and continued to side-hustle passion projects which led me to write content for the top media outlets in Los Angeles like KIISFM and MyFM.
After spearheading the food blog for those stations, I was noticed by the team of Wolfgang Puck and went on to become their Senior Brand Manager, creating digital content for their catering and events division where I ultimately hosted video segments for the brand at the Academy Awards… on the red carpet.
As they say, all good things must come to an end and with the unprecedented pandemic of 2020, I was laid-off from the dream job with Wolfgang Puck. At this point, I couldn’t let my dreams of hosting my own talk show sit on the back burner any longer, so I rebooted Kasey’s Korner in a new and innovative way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have recently become known as “The Millennial Mom”, which is a title I initially tried to stay away from as there is typically a negative connotation attached to the word “millennial”, however I have decided to transform that stigma and give the term the power it deserves.
To me, being a millennial is extremely powerful. We are the bridge between generations, we were the birth of social media and we have lived through more “unprecedented times” than any other. Through my daily content and weekly podcast, I am showing my peers that it is ok to deviate from the traditional parenting methods of the Boomers who raised us and set an example for the next generation to take different approaches and adapt their own style of parenting.
We also are a generation of moms who are doing this parenting thing with less support than generations before us. Think about it — there are more single moms, uncoupled couples, working parents and a number of other newly defined circumstances. Also, in prior years generations of families often lived in the same town, if not the same house so there was more access to unpaid childcare, guidance and examples of what to do throughout our community.
We are now flying the nest for college in other states, traveling abroad or relocating for job opportunities, so we are being forced to figure this all out without the extended support system our parents had…
I also believe that since we were the first generation to experience social media, we’ve developed a dangerous “comparative narrative”. We are so used to seeing everyone’s highlight reel or the carefully curated content that our peers put up on social media we feel the constant need to compete or compare with things that aren’t real.
My goal as The Millennial Mom is to shift that mindset and give women permission to be more than “just a mom”. I want them to have the audacity to go after any dreams and passions they dare to pursue. I hope to build a community of strong, empowered, supported women who want to see each other succeed and raise kind humans who will hopefully do the same for our future society.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Growing up in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, I always knew my big dreams would outgrow the small town. From a young age, I dreamed of moving to “Hollywood” and becoming an actress. In later years the dream of acting turned into a dream of being an Entertainment Reporter like Mary Hart then later evolved to being a talk show host like Oprah… those dreams weren’t going to come true where I was, so I had to make that move West.
Having lived throughout the LA area for the past 11 years, I have learned that whatever your dream is, you can make it a reality. There is an abundance of creativity, passion and drive in this city. The key is to surround yourself with the right people who have similar passions but don’t feel the need to compete. On that note, finding those “right people” might be one of the more difficult things about our city. There is always going to be someone who is trying to sell you something, feed on a insecurity or take advantage of you… you need to weed through those people quickly and find the good ones. They will be the ones who will truly want the best for you, help you succeed and make this place home for you.
