Rising Stars: Meet JT

Today we’d like to introduce you to JT.

JT, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Before we get started I’d like to say, Thank you, VoyageLA, for the constant support, it doesn’t go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated. Along with that my new single and official music video is out now, BAD TIMING 101 by JT can be streamed on all major DSPs and the video is out now and thriving on Youtube, now more about me. Growing up in Oakland California. JT, I found myself emerging deeper into the arts and using my creativity as a means of release and freedom. After graduating from the Fada Fashion Academy at Oakland Technical High School, I pursued a college education at Berkeley city college. Berkeley is where music started for me. I began working with local artists and engineers to formulate a wave-curating sound. My melodic choices and mellow tone help set the mood more on most if not all occasions. With songs like F.I.N.E ft Ramon Cristwell, Bad for me, and a mixtape executive produced by me titled “GoodLuck”, I repeatedly showcase his vast rage and advanced lyrical abilities. these opened a plethora of doors for me to showcase versatility, giving me the chance to open up for grammy nominated artists like Chika and perform at places like Stanford University.

Currently, I’m a full-time student studying entertainment and record industry management at Texas southern university. Although busy with school, I continue to feed his fans with new releases and visuals. My newest single bad timing 101 is a whirlwind of harmonies and emotions, he takes you on a journey with his vocals and excites you with thoroughly composed bridges and sections. The official music video for the song, also directed by me, gives a more visual insight into the background of the song laying out the emotions I was going through at the time in a palatable visual form. I hope my passion for music and arts can help someone enjoy their time on earth more. My self-curated arts festival, black art share, is one of his many efforts on this journey, and hopes to continue this work with your help! More info about me can be found on my website, Luljt.com.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This question is so funny cause my new song “BAD TIMING 101” talks about some of the challenges I’m facing right now as a student musician. Although there have been many struggles balancing being a student musician, I can say my journey is unique and that I have placed myself in a position to be appreciative of all wins I receive, This mindset has landed me jobs performing and speaking at nonprofit fundraising events in my hometown, where we raised almost $500,000 in educational funds for students K-12.

Most recently, I spoke in DC at the Watergate hotel where the “Power of Place” event was held. I spoke about my journey as a student who does music and the importance of place-based organizations in low-income urban environments. Without these outlets and types of orgs, my obstacles would feel more life-threatening than how they do if I didn’t have the support of the types of units.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a singer/songwriter, I also knew I would venture off into producing like the people who inspired me but actualizing it and being in It now is an insane feeling, it makes you feel kind of unstoppable. Being able to create classic music at your fingertips, start to finish, is life-altering.

My degree is in Entertainment and record industry management, and my natural abilities partnered with my newly learned skill set puts me in a totally different position than I was before. It makes me proud to say I can stand alone and set myself aside from the herd with the skills and knowledge I worked so diligently for. More music and info can be found at Luljt.com.

What matters most to you? Why?
My happiness as an artist matters most to me. I could say as a human or a person but I feel like being an artist is a completely different life experience if you fight for it. These are my dreams and life goals, these matter most, always.
