Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerad Armijo.
Hi Jerad, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My photography journey started in high school 15 years ago. After college in Tallahassee, Florida I decided to pack up and move across country. The west coast offers such a variety of landscapes in comparison to the south where I lived. I became addicted to all the beauty it has to offer. I wanted to see it all, and most importantly, I wanted to continue my journey as an artist through the medium of landscape photography.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
A good journey is never smooth. My journey has never been smooth, and I honestly appreciate the chaos that comes with it. You know as an artist, you always naturally second guess yourself to the point where it can be considered self-sabotage. You cycle through the same questions “Am I doing this right?”, “Is this enough?”, “This is terrible, I’m better than this”, “I should just stop. My voice is pointless”. Overall, I think the biggest struggle is trying to find my balance and to continue to balance without breaking.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in artistic landscape photography. I use the landscape to create visual poetry about my life. I am very metaphorical with my work. I am hyper-conscious on shapes, colors, and textures. I like to create layers of artistic expression using multiple techniques. I seem to be known for my minimalistic take on landscapes, my imagery of the southwest, and the utilization of delicate color from my chromesthesia into my work. Honestly, what I am most proud of is still being alive. Years ago, I was suicidal. I am proud that I worked through my emotional trauma and am now able to create positive experiences from it that push me forward rather than bring me down. My journey as an artist has been intense, but in the end I’m incredibly happy that I’m here right now making this art for myself and for others to enjoy in hopes to connect others together.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Find different inspirations and be true to YOUR eye. I wish someone told me to look outside the genre of landscape photography when I first started. I think it is incredibly important to find inspiration that are not in your genre of art. I also want people to experiment more. I wish someone told me that there is not a wrong way to photograph (anything) for that matter. There are no rules, you make your own, and you break them to continually elevate your artistry.
